FW 1.08 - HD upgrade to ext3 & Hardisk check
« on: March 18, 2010, 08:34:22 PM »

Hi All,

Is there a guide or how can we upgrade or existing hard disk (ext2) from Firmware to ext3 using firmware 1.08.

After we upgarde the firmware, the HD does not automatically convert the ext2 file system to new ext3 system.
And if we feel is OK to wipe out our existing HD (ext2) and re-format to ext3, what is the steps to do it ?

so is there a new guide to guide us.

And also how can we check if our HD is already formatted to ext-3 and how can we do health & error checking after we converted the HD to ext3 ? (using telnet funplug or web-based).

thanks ...

I do not believe there is any "upgrade" option or doc.

Backup all files
Install disks in PC and remove all partitions
Install in NAS and reconfigure / format
Restore data

There's no need to remove/reinstall disks - just backup the data, select RAID tools in the web admin and take it from there.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Agree with Fordem.  I just backed up my files to another machine, went into the tools and just recreated the raid 1 volume, it asked me if I wanted to use EXT2 or EXT3.  I formatted with EXT3 and then ran a scandisk just to be sure.  Then I shipped all my files back to the DNS323.

To ech his/her own. I prefer nuking partitions from a PC to ensure it is fully cleared.

I ran the scandisk thats built into the DNS323.  Go to the tools tab and look for disk tools.  There you will see the scandisk button you can click to have the NAS do a scandisk on the raid drives.

I do not believe you can use the DOS/Windows version of scandisk on a raid system.
