Hello.

I have recently got myself a DNS-323-2TB. It came with the 2TB of storage on-board and ready to go.

As per the instructions, I connected this to my router (thompson TG587n V2) via the ethernet cable in the box, used the d-link easy search software and mapped the drives (y&z). It all worked just fine and I was able to copy over a load of data successfully.

However, after rebooting the laptop, it seems that for some reason the drives will not map automatically, and I need to use the d-link easy search software every time to connect to the drives again. I've tried this a couple of times and the same thing keeps happenning. Until I run the easy search function and map them manually, they appear on the 'my computer' page, with a red cross next to each. I also get a system tray notice that there is a problem mapping the drives automatically when the laptop is switched on.

I am wondering if there is anything simple that I've missed or got wrong, or if anyone is able to advise on why the mapping isn't automatic?  ???

Clearly, I'm not really a technical person, but had hoped that this would be as simple as it claims on the box. I'm using vista Home premium, if that helps anyone.

Any advice would would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Stuart

I'm guessing that you are using Wireless on your Laptop...

If so, it's "normal" for Window to not be able to map to a Network Drive right away since your wireless connection is not establish yet...

Give it a couple of seconds after Windows says that your are connected to the internet.
Even thought the mapped drives will still have a red X on them in "computer"
if you double click on them it will connect and the red X will go away.

Thanks for the response.

I tried again, waited as advised and then clicked the drive. The error message I get is:

Microsoft Windows Network: The specified username is Invalid. The connection has not been restored.

I didn't realise my home network had a password?

Again, apologies as for many on here this is no doubt child's play.

Thanks

Microsoft Windows Network: The specified username is Invalid. The connection has not been restored.

This means that the stored username / password Windows has for the DNS-323 drives are not valid...
If you HAVE a username and password to log into Windows...
Juste create a user in the DNS-323 with the same username and password.. this should work.

If you DON'T have a username / password to log into Windows... then you will need to enter the credentials for a user that is setup in the DNS-323. Or Erase all users in the DNS-323 and give Read/Write access to all shares to all users in the DNS-323

Theres a "feature" in the DNS-323 that does NOT let you have "free access" folders and "user protected" folders at the same time.... >:(

I appreciate you help Buhric.

I dont currently have any passwords for windows setup.

As far as my credentials for the 323 go, I assume that this is generic username that I have not changed? I have not setup a password.

"then you will need to enter the credentials for a user that is setup in the DNS-323"

By this do you mean setup a password for windows via ctrl/alt/delete usng the same, generic one as currently exists on the 323?

"Or Erase all users in the DNS-323 and give Read/Write access to all shares to all users in the DNS-323"

How do I go about this?

As you can tell, I've managed to get myself very confused....

I suggest having a password on the NAS and your Windows, Windows networking is happier in general if accounts have a password.

I agree with gunrunnerjohn.

And in case you don't want to have to enter a password at the windows logon,
Theres some Registry keys you can add so that Windows Automaticaly logins with a specific account.
Even if that account is password protected, same login effect has if there was only 1 account with no password.

Just run control userpasswords2 on XP or newer and you can configure the automatic login for any account with no registry hacking.  You can also manage the saved passwords with that utility.
