Hello Everyone,

I purchased a DLink DIR-655 to hook up to my current wired desktop to enable wireless connectivity of another desktop, a netbook, and a laptop, if possible.

I am not very savvy with configuring these sorts of things, I know it comes with a disc that has a supposedly easy set-up wizard, but I just somehow feel it's not going to be easy.

I am starting out with my current gateway desktop, which instead of Verizon's DSL modem, it's hooked up to a DLINK DSL-2540B combo modem/router, and it works great. I do not yet have any wireless capabilities. I want to hook up my new DIR-655 Wireless router to this desktop so that I can connect at least my new netbook and laptop wirelessly to the internet.

Do I just have to hook up the DIR-655 to the existing DLINK DSL modem via wired connection? Or does the DIR-655 need to be hooked up directly to my desktop first, then to the combo DSL modem/router?

This is just the first step I'd like to figure out, then I will try to set up, say, my laptop to connect to it wirelessly. I believe my laptop does have an installed wireless adapter, though I don't think it's DLINK.

I'm just afraid something will get messed up because I won't understand what to enter into the wizard, which happened to me when I set up my DSL combo modem/router. I had called Tech Support, and first got nowhere, got disconnected, but to my surprise, someone actually called me back (a different person). The person that called me back seemed like a U.S. techie, which was great! He sure got me up and running and set up in no time. But I just dread the possibility of having to call tech support again.

Also, the user manual states I can only use the Ethernet port on my modem, which is confusing me. I'm not sure if I'm using a USB connection.

I do have DSL and believe I connect via PPPoE, but it says to make sure to disable or uninstall any PPPoE software from my computer or I won't be able to connect to the internet. I don't even know how to check if I have and PPPoE software. How can I check this?

I'm just scared of totally messing up my DSL connection and am not very familiar with all the tech lingo and such.

Do you think I'll be okay hooking everything up in a breeze?

Is there anything I need to  configure beforehand to make this easy?

Someone please help if possible!

I have the same setup, I actually have been using the DIR-655 for 2 years now and love it.  I just replaced my verizon modem with the DSL-2540B.  The best thing to do for the setup is to use the Disk that guides you thru the setup process.  Once your Connected then you can start to familiarize yourself with the various settings.  For Instance I play MMO's and have an xbox 360 here, so I use the QOS settings as well as setting up the Port Forwarding so my gaming takes priority and there are no interruptions.

Setup actually should have been pretty easy, and also you will want to put all your wired connections thru your Dir-655 instead of using the Modem.  Once you setup your connection you want to go into the settings on your new Dir-655 and you can set up a WEP or WPA security password.  I set my own because this way I can remember it.  Then you will go to each of your Devices that are connected to the Network and put in that password so that all devices are setup securely.  For Instance you will go to your Xbox and go to where you setup your internet, have xbox detect your settings, then choose the name of your Network because a few choices may show up.  If for instance your Network Name is "Home" then choose that, then you can enter your password for the Router.  Then you should be able to connect.  You can do this with all devices you want to connect wireless.  Im not sure if you have to do it for wired since all my devices are wireless, I dont think you have too.

You want to set up your Router Settings because you don't want everyone in the neighborhood using your network connection as a hot-spot and bogging down your internet speed.  I see one of my neighbors he always has at least 60 ip's attached to his router, yet he can't be bothered setting up his router.

Also to help you with your settings and understanding them download the PDF Manual for the DIR-655 it explains everything pretty clearly.

If you have any other Questions Ill be happy to help if I can, also if you do ask something let me know what OS you are using, Windows 7 or something else.

Thank you! I did try the disc first, but had to input some things that I had no knowledge of. I did try anyway, but apparently I did something wrong. I ended up calling D-Link tech support, and they walked me through it all quite quickly! After that, my network was up and running and it works great!
