DIR-825 - can i use all 5 ports and use as a "dumb" router
« on: March 16, 2010, 06:43:07 PM »

hi,

i only want to use the 825 as an AP, but need all 4 switch ports for devices. as such i need to use the unit as the dumbest router possible.

here is what i want to do:

use internet port as another switch port / or turn off all firewall & routing features so it basically performs the same way.

is this possible, if so how?

apologies in advance if my request doesn't make sense.

You can not re-assign the WAN port to be part of LAN ports.

You can not re-assign the WAN port to be part of LAN ports.

that's ok, but how about making use of that port in a way that i get the connectivity needed inbound on the WAN port, so i can actually use all 4 of the other ports?

every time i try the WAN port, i lose all connecivity.

You cam set up a second IP network by connecting the "first" IP network onto the WAN port.

Main Router (192.168.1.1)  --- { Network 192.168.1.2 -- 192.168.1.253 }
                                           \__
                                               \___  Second Router (192.168.2.1) --- { Network 192.168.2.xxx}
                                                       [WAN: 192.168.2.254]
The two networks should work.

ok, then i assume i need to make 2 additional changes on both primary router and secondary router in addition to those above, right?

change 1 - change subnet mask to 255.255.0.0
change 2 - make gateway on router 2 192.168.1.1 so internet traffic routes correctly?

ok, so i tried that, i get no connectivity at all when i swing the LAN connection from switch port to WAN port after making changes. .

i can't ping 2.1 or 2.254 from the other side either

it is connected though however as the DAP1522 is connected up to it and is passing traffic and providing connectivity to my other clients on the .2 network.

i just can't see the 825 now

no combination of settings on the 825 will work that allow for connectivity from 192.168.2 subnet to 192.168.1 subnet / internet.

i believe this is due to the fact that the 825 will not allow a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 for the WAN interface, and it also won't allow me to put 192.168.1.1 as the gateway when i use 192.168.2.1 as the LAN IP address.

maybe a simpler question(s) for folks to answer would be one/some of the following:

1. how do you turn off ALL of the firewall/security features on the 825? this also includes disabling DHCP, DNS, etc if possible.
or
2. can the 825 route traffic across 2 separate private subnets, if so how does it have to be configured to make this work when another router will be providing DHCP,DNS, and routing services?
3. is the 825 a layer2 / layer 3 switch? nothing in the manual or spec sheet clarifies this and Juniper tech support wanted to know this so they can determine how to configure their box.
