Preamble setting is main issue with the DWA-160
« on: September 29, 2009, 11:45:57 AM »

I have had my DIR-855 since it was first released and I have had many issues with wireless signal dropping to disconnections. I had bought the DWA-160 Rev.A thinking that it was going to fix my issues and it did not. I exchanged to DWA-160 Rev.B and installed the Ralink Drivers but I still had the same issues. I did some research and stumble up the Preamble settings. The router calls it Short GI. Checking or unchecking the Short GI setting in router did not fix my issues however setting the preamble setting on the Wireless adapter from Long/Auto to short fix my disconnect issues. The way I did this with the DWA-160 is by setting the driver setting to Game mode by going into the driver properties under the device manager and clicking on the driver tab. Mostly all Wireless adapter have Either a Preamble or game mode setting under the driver tab. I set all my dell wireless adapter to short and everything is working great. Cisco recommends that wireless devices be set up with short Preamble, and in case your wandering what is the difference - Long preamble nothing more than a fix for issues related to the older b wireless standard and Short actually lower down the wireless latency which is why is used for game mode. The DWA-160 Rev.A does not allow changing the preamble settings with the current D-Link driver.

Thanks for sharing this info. I am having the same problem with my DWA-160 Rev A & DIR-855.
I've noticed the disconnects happen more frequently when streaming video and less frequently with normal web browsing. What you're saying makes sense as the cause of my problems.

Hi,

Same here with a Rev A1.  Is there any solution for a Rev A1?  I mainly got this to try to stream from a Netgear 5Ghz AP, but those dropped connections make that impossible.

I know that I've only been working with the DWA-160, but seeing some of the posts/threads on this forum is not encouraging :(...

I updated my DWA-160 Rev.B driver from Ralink yesterday and I didn't even have to set the gaming mode setting under the driver tab since the driver was using the Short Preamble setting by default. Everything just worked. I even transfered 15 Gigs of data across the network with no problems. Signal strenght also seem better with new driver. Dlink needs to release a driver for Rev.A that allows changing of the Preamble settings, and I bet that it will fix most if not all issues with disconnects. Either that or figure out how to make Long Preamble work.

Hi,

As an owner of a Rev A1 DWA-160, I definitely agree with the above.  Does anyone from Dlink actually monitor these forums?

I am living a NIGHTMARE with this new DWA-160 Rev. A1

Streaming video is impossible, even SD video... my 802.11b card could outperform hands down.
I am completely out of luck with this card or is there a driver or some fix that can help us poor souls that got suckered into buying this card?

I do not have Rev A's anymore. However I saw that there is a new driver out since last I posted here. If you have rev A DWA-160 please check if preamble setting is available now and if it is try changing the setting to Short or gaming mode reply.
