DNS323 Windows 7 Startup Script
« on: February 04, 2010, 06:19:28 AM »

Hey Guys,
I have had the 323 for several years, accessed by 2 XP machines and a linux box.  All working without issue.

Under XP I used to run a batch file from the startup calling "net use" to map the network drives at startup.
Occassionally the device goes onto an open network so I have 2 user accounts, both with passwords (read only and a read / write) and no open access.

I have recently upgraded the 2 XP machines to Windows 7 Pro. 1 is 32 bit and 1 is 64 bit.

I can map the network drives, enter the username and password and the drive connects.  On reboot windows tells me it cannot re-connect to the network drives.

Using the same batch file that worked under XP tells me the network password is incorrect although this is def not the case.

This is driving me a little mental, have searched alot and tried adjusting various policies in Windows all to no avail.  I can connect without issue if I want to enter the username and password each time i reboot which is a royal pain.

Anyone else seen this issue and resolved it?  Ive read many people are using the device under 7 without an issue but most seem to be using open access rather than named users.

Any help would be great.  Thanks

I also have a 32 and 64 bits version of Windows 7 on 2 different computers, a desktop (64) and a laptop (32)

On the DNS-323 I have a couple of users setup, one of them is the same Username / password has my Desktop Windows.
And this one I don't need any scripts to map the drive...
I just Selected "MapNetwork Drive" in "Computer". and selected the option to reconnect every time.
Laptop is connected to the network with a ethernet cable.

Different story for my Laptop... the Windows User is not in the users list of the DNS-323,
and it connects via Wireless.
I mapped the drive using the same method has for my desktop, but this Time I selected "Connect Using different Credentials" and entered the username/password of a valid DNS-323 user and also selected "Reconnect at logon".
Now every time I reboot, Windows tells me that it was not able to reconnect to all mapped drives,
I see the drive in "Computer" with a red X on it.
but if I double-click on it, I can access the drive normally...

This is because Wifi Connections take a bit of time to establish itself... so the mapping is done before the laptop is connected to the network. and thus Windows gives out that error....

I also read in this forum that if the Windows Username is the SAME has a DNS-323 defined user, but with a different password, you will not be able to "automatically" reconnect...
Windows Will always try to use its password when you are trying to access the DNS-323....
Ans since its not the same password defined in the DNS-323... it will fail to connect

I have setup the shares with the same user names and passwords as the Windows Boxes in my network and never had any issues on Windows XP, Vista and 7.

Thanks for the responses guys.
The usernames are the same as the Windows logins however the windows logins do not have passwords.

So in effect the password is different for windows and the NAS.  however this was not a problem under windows XP and isnt an issue for the Linux box so there must be a way around it under 7.

Why does it have the option to remember the credentials (which i have also tried) if it just then uses the windows login and password?

Has anyone solved this, it seems more of a windows issue but it is pretty poor functionality as it stands.

living in hope....

You could try this....
in Windows 7
OPen "Computer"
click on "Organize" --> "Folder and Search Options"
Go to the "View" tab
Scroll all the way down, and
Unselect the "Use Sharing Wizard"
And Apply the changes...

Now see if mapping now works correctly for you.....

I remember that I had a similar networking issue in XP, not related to the DNS-323 but sharing files between a 98 and a XP computer.... Disabling the Sharing Wizard option in XP resolved the issue...

My DNS-323 name/password is different from my Windows login, and I have no problem with Windows 7 Ultimate, Vista Ultimate, or XP-Pro saving the DNS-323 password and connecting automatically.  This works even after rebooting the Windows machine, DNS-323, or both ends.

Try This...

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Send LM & NTLM responses

Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

This is a known fact between linux and windows. The solution above was tested with Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate. Goodluck!  ;D

This was also fixed in most recent editions of SAMBA.  Since I've never seen this with either the DNS-321 or DNS-323 and three different Windows 7 installation, I have to believe this isn't the reason for this issue. I also have a friend with a DNS-323 and Windows 7, he has no issues connecting to his NAS either.

I ran into a similar problem when I moved from an XP system to a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit system. I have some shares that are open, and some that require a user name and password. Like you, I had a batch file that I ran at startup that called net use to map a share that required a user name and password. I had no problems accessing the open shares under Windows 7, but initially couldn’t get access to the password protected shares from Windows Explorer, and couldn’t net use to work. It’s been a few weeks, so the details are a little fuzzy now, but I think that all my problems went away when I changed my Windows 7 workgroup to match the DNS-323 workgroup. All I know for sure is that Windows Explorer is now able to remember the necessary credentials across reboots, and I no longer have a batch file running net use at startup.

yauser,

After the last DNS-323 firmware update, were you still able to access your open shares without a password ?

Open share worked fine for me before the last firmware update.  After the last update Windows 7 always wants a password, the same login credintials I have set on the root volume.

Ubuntu Linux still lets me access the open shares without credintals.

Anyone have this problem ?

With 1.08 and totally open shares, I have no issue accessing the DNS-323 from Windows 7.

Open shares, no problems but when I boot my laptop it sometimes says the drives didn't reconnect - double click on the maps and they are fine.

BTW forestcomber  - you are not on Ubuntu 10.04 yet obviously.  Fstab smbfs/cifs mounts now want a user and pass by default. Without one you will need to add a "guest" option when mounting - ie:
/computer/mount  mnt/point  user, auto, guest    (took me two days to figure out what the heck was going on...)
