I recently purchased and installed a DNS-323 along with 2 x WD Green 1Tb drives. All is going well as it should - I do have 2 questions about functions I may be missing out on..

I have the 323 on  static IP on my home network, running through a D-Link DIR-655 router.

1. Remote access. Is there a way to access the 323 (not FTP, I can do that) remotely to take control of it ? I access it when I am on my network by entering it into my browser. I wish to do the same from work for instance.

3. Bittorrent client is up and running, but works for public torrent sites only.
I have tried it with a private site but BT does not connect. Perhaps this is an issue peculiar to the site - anyone with any experience ?

The chief issue with remote control using HTTP is most ISP's block port 80 for residential accounts.

If you use port translation in your router and port forward a different port to port 80 on the DNS-323, you should be able to login remotely.

Thanks - I have successfully forwarded port 80 HTTP traffic to my 323 - apparently Time Warner Cable allows port 80 traffic.

Managed to access my 323 from my iPhone - I guess security is a question though.
What would the solution be then to avoid folks scanning ip's and hammering away at my 323 with a password cracker.

There is no real solution to that.  Use a secure password.

Your options are either use non-standard (not well-known) public port translated to NAS or/and limit pulic networks from which you can access your NAS. But the second option greatly depends on your hardware capabilities and your demands.
Generally allowing public access to management interfaces of internal devices in not a good idea and should be avoided whenever possible.

Another good idea is to disable the port forwarding in your router when you know it won't be necessary.
