Dir 655 wireless range
« on: May 26, 2010, 10:08:16 AM »

I am completely new to this so here is the story.  I have a DIR 655 in my house, it is located in my basement storage area next to my cable modem(i know not the best place)  I have a Dlink ANT24-0700 omni directional antenna installed on it.  The Dir 655 works flawlessly up and down the 2.5 stories of my house with always 5bars and excellent signal strength.

Loacted 286ft from my house is my workshop/garage.  I have a piece of 5e running over from the house to the workshop (underground in its own conduit with the phone and alarm cables) but I can seem to connect at that distance.  No problem I thought so I had a Dlink DWA-552 Xtreme N Desktop adapter installed in my PC in the Workshop.  I can see the wireless and on a sunny day sometimes connect, but not regularily.

Help..I have been reading for 2days, do I need a bridge, an access point, an outdoor antenna?  I called the Dlink Tech line with limited success.  I know the problem is that the workshope is 300ft away from the house but there must be a realitvely easy way to get a strong wireless signal over to it?

any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

If your shop is on the same household electrical power "grid" (same power meter) I would suggest you look into a pair of newer Powerline Networking devices (HomePlug) to get your signal out to your shop.

The newer ones are rated near 300Mbps (between the home plug units) and have 100Mbps Ethernet to feed your shop and on the other end it just plugs into your router.  I use older homplug devices here in my home to get access to the XBox360's here and it runs fine....
