No router advertisement with "IPv6 in IPv4 Tunnel"
« on: June 12, 2010, 02:51:47 PM »

I have a DIR-615, hardware C1, firmware 3.12NA, and I've configured an "IPv6 in IPv4 Tunnel", from tunnelbroker.net. For some reason, the router isn't issuing an icmp6 router advertisement as it should. After manually configuring the IPv6 settings in both Ubuntu Linux 10.04 and in Windows 7, I get perfect IPv6 connectivity. I have "Enable Autoconfiguration" checked, and I've tried both stateless and stateful autoconfiguration.

I noticed that with the router configured for "6 to 4," it does send out router advertisements.

Is this a bug in the firmware?

I have noticed DIR-615 C1 to be very picky.

I changed back to 3.11 firmware, when I noticed that I was unable to get my SIXXS tunnel to work with 3.12.

I use a 6-in-4 tunnel (from SiXXS), and the 3.12 firmware seemed buggy regarding the saving the DNS servers for the tunnel. I could not get it to save the automatic DNS setting, instead I had to enter something manually. And the tunnel did not work even after that...

The firmware also caused random intermittent (DNS?) failures when surfing normal IPv4 internet web sites.

Reverting back to 3.11 removed both problems.

In addition, even with 3.11 the IPv6 autoconfig only works, if the router is left alone for some time after router boot so that it gets initialized and has time to form the tunnel, before I turn the PC on. If I turn PC on immediately after the router boot, the IPv6 connectivity will not work, although IPv4 works normally.

I haven't had the troubles the SixXs user described. As I said, IPv6 is working great, except that there are no router advertisements in this mode.

I wouldn't want to downgrade to 3.11 anyway, as 3.12 fixed several annoying bugs -- particularly with IPv4 DHCP. I've thought of switching to DD-WRT, but that'd be radical surgery to cure a nuisance.

dd-wrt for C1 doesn't support ipv6.

IPv6 support has been left out of the DIR-615 DD-WRT builds out of space concerns (only 4 MB to work with). However, since DD-WRT is basically Linux, a knowledgeable user can pretty much do/install/remove what they like from command line.

There are suggestions that the firmware modification kit - http://www.bitsum.com/firmware_mod_kit.htm - can be used to strip unnecessary packages out (like hotspot-related ones) and put the ones required for IPv6 functionality in. There is a lot of info on the DD-WRT wiki about enabling IPv6 support if there's enough space available. It does involve a lot of "hacking" though and the changes won't be reflected in the interface, unless someone also goes to the trouble of modding the interface to match the new changes.

Okay, I fixed my own problem. It was (mostly) my mistake. tunnelbroker.net gave me two DNS servers, one with an IPv6 address, one with an IPv4 address. On Advanced>IPv6, I'd set the IPv6 DNS server as the primary DNS server, the IPv4 as secondary. Since an IPv4 address was invalid in this context, the router must have refused to advertise itself as an IPv6 router. Once I deleted the IPv4 address, it started advertising itself.

The D-Link Web interface would give me error messages about invalid entries elsewhere on that configuration page, but not for that option. So, a minor bug in the firmware at worst.
