DNS-323 hangs during file transfer
« on: June 18, 2010, 09:54:04 PM »

My DNS-323 is hanging during file transfers.

It ran flawlessly for three years, now when moving data to or from the NAS it will mysteriously hang after a variable period.

The NAS slows down so much even shutting it down takes several minutes and the web interface becomes unresponsive.

I've upgraded the firmware and done factory resets - neither resolved the problem.

This happens when accessing the NAS from different PCs.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm frantic!

If you have telnet access, try looking which process is causing the load. Write "top" to see the load levels and the processes loading the server. Press "q" to exit.

Are you running any add-ons like fun_plug or packages? How many drives do you have and which mode are you running them i.e single volumes, RAID etc? It might be bad sectors on a disk causing the drive to be unresponsive during attempted recovery. But this all depends on your drives, their configuration and how your NAS is configured to use them.
I would suggest shutting down the NAS and testing your drive(s) on a PC using the manufacturers diagnostics if you can.

@Jamieburchell - nope. I'm running no addons.

I am using 2 drives in RAID 1. I'm pretty sure it is not bad sectors because the drives work just fine in an external enclosure.

I'm beginning to think my switch/router is actually the cause as this happens accessing the NAS from multiple machines AND when I try to transfer to other devices on the network.
