HD via SLINGBOX...
« on: June 27, 2010, 06:23:25 PM »

How do I get HD feed to and then from my brand new Slingbox PRO? The speed of our Shaw, modem, router, slingbox, streaming is approximately 1700 kb/s.  We are running Windows 7, and the computer has a blue-ray player so IS capable of HD.... BUT, the picture is "jerky".  I have set up using the best cables I could buy and plugged them in appropriately to the back of the slingbox and to the DVR.

We are currently getting the non-HD feed to the Slingbox using the S-Video port.  I have a blueray player in my computer, the router was recently upgraded by SHAW, our cable provider.  I have the DIR-628 and I need to know if I need to hook up the DIR-628 to another d-link product (but which one?) to get the HD live streaming.   :-[

You may not be able to get full speeds through your internet connection. Full HD is about 8 Mpbs from the Slingbox most people are not going to be able to get that. Even if your uplink at home is that good, you likely won't be able to pull that all the way to where you're streaming. Also, if the Slingbox cannot get a connection directly through TCP or through the STUN-like protocol it uses to get through NAT, it has to rely on a relay server which usually won't give you as good a quality. Some firewalls won't be tricked (especially corporate firewalls). I've never seen more than 1700 Kbps on a relay connection.

On the Slingbox end, you should likely be able to get the port forwarding accomplished with UPnP. It's on by default in the 628 and the Slingbox. If you look in the logs (in the Staus tab) you'll see a log entry when that gets configured. If not, use the little setup program to do a manual configuration for remote viewing and find out what IP and port to use, then configure that in the 628 Web UI in the Advanced tab. This will help you get the best you can on that end, but there's nothing the Slingbox can do about the client end.

Cheers

You need very high speed internet, like say Comcast or Verizon's FiOs.  Not only that but, where ever you are remotely(outside of you home network, i.e. in another state), Whom's ever's internet connections you are using needs to have relatively the same internet connection speed.

Hypothetically, your Internet Service Provider's download speed is 6Mbps, other person's internet download speed is also 6Mbps.  You'll get up to 6Mbps. But if other person's internet download speed is less than yours, then you'll only get up to their maximum download speed.  Which is to say not optimum.

To be blunt, all things need to be on the same level, i.e.

I hope this helps:)
