Shareport stalls during backup
« on: February 21, 2010, 08:54:20 AM »

My router is DIR-855, hardware ver. A2, firmware 1.22NA, currently using a linksys wmp54g adapter while I wait for my DIR 160 dual band USB adapter to arrive.  Shareport version 1.1.0 R1 (SXUPT Driver : 2.2.4.0). Running windows 7 64 bit.

I am not running a software firewall (no windows firewall) and using Nod32 virus protection.  So, I'm fairly confident it isn't my virus software or a software firewall problem.

Following the advice of others on this forum, I enabled multicasting on my router and enabled broadcast addresses on the shareport, using address 192.168.0.225.  I admit that I'm am not entirely sure what this is doing, but it did solve the problem of shareport not being able to connect to my network drive (even though it could see it).  If someone could explain this, that would be great.

The drive is a 75gb laptop ide drive from an old laptop that I have in a harddrive enclosure and plugged into the router USB port.  It works fine with connected directly to my computer usb port.  It is connected to the router through a powered usb hub.

I am using Areca backup utility ver. 7.1.6, which is a freeware backup utility that is very helpful.  It works fine when the destination drive is hooked up directly to my computer.  When I try to backup using my network drive as the destination, it will get part way through the backup, then stall without recovery.  If I run it again (I have to disconnect the network drive and reconnect it, since it is still running from the previous backup attempt) it will run past the initial stall point and do a little more, then stall again.  After doing this about five time, it will complete.

This is obviously not ideal.  Is there something I can do the enable the drive to make it through an entire backup?  It's backing up somewhere between 2-7 gb, so, not that much really.

Interestingly, I also noticed that when the backup stalls and I force the backup utility to close, my browser also stopped responding.  I exited the shareport utility from the task bar and the browser (firefox) started responding again.

an update:  since I am not currently using my 5 gHz band and I don't have any "n" adapters connected currently, I decided to try turning off 5 gHz broadcasting and switch the 2.4 gHz band to broadcast "g" only.  Then I tried backing up using the shareport drive again.  This time, it made it through the entire backup.  It is still considerably slower than when hooked up directly to my computer, but it didn't stall out.

Not sure if this is a fix, as I will have to try to backup again and see if it make it the whole way.  Also, this leaves the question, what happens when I get my dual band adapter and turn back on 5 gHz broadcasting and "n"?

OK, scratch that.  Tried backing up again and it stalls in the same place, about 1/3 of the way through.  I then have to close the backup utility, close shareport and physically disconnect the network drive from the router, since it is still running and won't reconnect.  Then I can reconnect shareport and run the backup.  Any ideas about what is making it stall?  Perhaps if I run the back up, and let it go overnight it would eventually go past the stall point?  I'll I will try tonight.  If that works, the question is; why does it run so slowly when connected as a network drive, and is there some setting that I can change to fix this?

This problem may stem from the backup utility.  There are several posts on the sourceforge website concerning areca hanging when using network drives.

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=171505&atid=858191

So, I will investigate there and see if I can find out anything.

OK, I attempted to uninstall the areca backup utility to go back to a previous version, which some people were saying they had success with over network drives.  Now I can't get shareport to connect to my network drive anymore.  I'm back to the original problem.  It sees it, but won't connect.  I am now at a total loss.  I have uninstalled all versions of areca.  But I am no longer able to access my network drive after several computer reboots and disconnecting and reconnecting the drive.  Ugh.  Do I now need to resort to router reboots to get this thing to work?

after shutting down all computers on the network and rebooting the router and modem, I now have shareport working again.  I might just wait for them to update areca before trying it again.  They seem to come out with updates every few months, and there are several open bug reports about similar problems on their sourceforge page.  Perhaps they will address this in the next release.  In the mean time, does anyone have any recommendations for backup utilities similar in function to areca (lets you specify which files/directories you wish to back up and does it with one command) which is known to be shareport/network friendly?

Pluripotent:

It seems that the D-link techs do not monitor this forum or they do not have an answer to your, mine or many other people's problem. Certainly there have been no plausible explanations for many issues, only one work-around (that I have found) that seems to work for some things. I think shareport is just buggie at this point.

Maybe this is just obvious, but data transfer speeds across a wireless router I believe are lower than across a wired connetion, especially so if you switch to g.

Finally, you probably are not going to like this but my Windows Vista  backup has some selectivity, can be set to auto run, compresses the data, is free and it works. I did much reading about backup software (free and payed for) and many of them may have problems (at least according to the customer reviews). For now I'm sticking with the one that came with the OS.  I have not had to do a restore, I hope the darn works :-)

Good Luck

Thanks for the reply.  I will try the windows backup, but I seem to remember that it would only do a full hard drive image backup, which my 75 gigabyte drive is too small for, but I will have a second look.  I do not wish to back up everything, since most of the data on my hard drive are programs that can be reinstalled.   I only wanted the data files.

Once I get my n adapter, I will try again as well to see if that will help anything.

Could be waiting a while for acrea to release their next update, but they have been very consistent in the past, so we shall see.

I am still having problems with shareport randomly being unable to connect to my network drive.  It can see it, but it can't always connect to it.  This I am pretty sure is a shareport issue which is either a setting that I can change, or a bug, and I don't know which.  It could also be contributing to the backup failures.

It will be interesting to see who updates their software first; the proprietary shareport utility from d-link, last update 5/14/09, or the freeware backup utility from acrea, last update 2009-12-7.  Both previous versions are only 2 months apart, so we shall see.

Pluripotent:

My Windows Vista Home Premium OS does not support the full disk imaging function, but I am able to select various file types e.g photo, data etc.  There is no way (that I have found) to select particular folder or files.  If your system supports full backup including program files, there should be a way to select at least file type.

I backed up my root drive with 90GB data and programs to an external usb drive in 1/2 hr. There was 15GB of backup files. The backup files are compressed so I have no way of knowing how much data there actually is. I have it set on a schedule for auto backup. The software will search for only new or modified files for subsequent backups, until you request a new complete backup.

As I mentioned, it was easy, quick and it actually worked.

With respect to Shareport, I have tried every fix mentioned in this forum, including doing them independently and in combination. Some of the fixes work for a short time, some don't work at all, some work and cause other problems such as dropping the internet connection. I will continue to watch this forum, but it is obvious by the number of posts coming from D-Link techs. (not many) that this software has some real issues, that they do not know what to do about. I bought my DIR-655 without knowledge of of the Shareport feature, so I do not feel bad, but there are those that bought their routers with the expectation of using this feature. Good Luck

I downloaded the new SharePort 3.0 and it appears to be connecting reliably now, in the brief period that I've  been using it.   :)

I am still unable to get the Areca backup utility to complete an entire backup onto the network drive, even though it will do it on a separate internal drive.  Again, this may be a problem with Areca.  It is much slower when backing up with a shareport connected network drive and it stalls about halfway through.  But I can access files through shareport just fine.

I suppose I will have to wait untill the next Areca update to see if this is fixed.  Honestly, I'm not sure whether the problem lies with the Shareport utility or with the areca backup utility.  This shareport upgrade seems to point the problem towards areca...

OK, now Shareport 3.0 won't connect with the network drive.  It says it's connected, but it's not listed in windows 7.  But then, shareport will display an error message saying that it's not connected and try to connect again, then say it's connected, but it's still not listed...and on and on until I close the shareport program.

this is a me too type post - backup using acronis true image are 100% succcessful when USB drive connected to laptop and fail about using the same drive but connected to the router. the router is a Dlink DIR-655 hardware A4 and firmware updated to 1.33NA.

The point of failure is not consistent sometimes its 5 gig into the backup other times almost 50 gig  (total backup size is apx 57 gig).   It does not matter if I use a wired connection, or wireless connection.  I have updated every firmware possible  for this model laptop from dell (latitude d820)  have also update to sharepoint 3.0 and firmware 1.33NA

I downloaded the latest firmware for my router dir-855, firmware 1.23NA (which just became available) and now shareport is working, even with my backup program.
