D-Link Dir-655 horrible signal. what to do?
« on: June 30, 2010, 08:11:26 PM »

We just upgraded to  the D-link dir-655 and the signal can barely reach 20ft. Figured perhaps there's a setting I might be missing or something.
current settings:
 Transmit Power : high

Beacon Period : 100 (20..1000)

RTS Threshold : 2346 (0..2347)

Fragmentation Threshold : 2346 (256..2346)

DTIM Interval : 1 (1..255)

let me know if you need more specs to help. It would be nice not to have to sit in front of the router to get wifi access.

First af all check for latest driver to your laptop, wirless divice.
Look at manufacters website not your laptop driver site.

Try switching your router to only ONE 802.11 mode.  In my house and my router, DIR-655 A3, the mode that provides the most distance while keeping a strength over 30% is the 802.11g

are your walls made of metal that will kill your wireless, i would assume if you have a cellphone and you can get signal outside and not inside its your house.

i had a bad signal when i placed my router near my modem, move it to a high point away from other electronics and power adapters as they tend to put off internference.

also its best to not have a 2.4ghz cordless phone as it is on the same spectrum of your router.

also make sure you put the antennas like it shows in the dlink quickstart booklet

Hi,

You might want to see how many other wireless networks are nearby your home/apt and also what channel THEY are using.....try to use a less used channel like #3....

Could also be your unit is defective in some way and needs swapped out....20 feet is pretty low range....

I would try using G/N only, unless you gotta have B also....  I dropped all B devices a couple years ago....
