mounting external USB drive for backup
« on: July 06, 2010, 12:36:35 AM »

Hi all,

I've read a number of posts relating to using an external USB drive for back-up.
Is there a way to mount a drive to the USB port and configure back-up to the
drive via the DNS-323 web interface 'Scheduler'?

Thanks for any assistance.
Breaker.

An external drive can be connected & used, however, this would require you to "hack" the firmware, and is NOT supported by D-Link - there's a thread somewhere in the forum in which several of us have indicated to D-Link that we think such a feature is very desirable, in the hope that with a large enough number of requests, they'll take heed.

Thanks  foredem...I don't mind a hack :)
I do agree that DLink should implement this. I would even give up USB print capability
in favour of the ability to connect an external HD; otherwise they're only paying lip-service
to a practical backup function on the DNS-323.

Is the hack you're referring to the 'Fonz' 'funplug' package' mentioned in this thread:

Thanks!

Likely the same server, just specific to the DNS-323 http://wiki.dns323.info/howto:fun_plug

anyone know if the kernel in dlinks firmware 1.08 supports ntfs writes?  I actually have some time off and thinking of plugging this device.  really really really want to connect external USB drive.
