SPI firewall setting

Hi, I have a dir 300, and I cant find what looks like the place to ask my question, so im sorry if this is the wrong spot. I notice Stateful Packet Inspection is turned off by default in this router, are there any downsides to enabling it? I notice there seems to be some comments on the net saying it bogs the system down, or worse, prevents some connections? Any thoughts
