Yet another VPN issue
« on: October 03, 2010, 04:17:46 PM »

Greetings, hopefully someone out there can help me out.

After about 6 weeks of searching the net for "how-to" guides for VPN I finally succedded in getting it to work.

I have a dir-628 with firmware 1.24na.  I have the following virtual server settings in the advanced settings tab:

FTP - PORT 21 (this is a preconfigured setting)
PPTP - PORT 1723, also a preconfigured setting

The following is what took so long to find.

GRE (I configured this one and just named it) - the field with tcp/udp/both/other select other and put 4 in the protocal field.

Up the the previous step I kept getting entries in the lot that GRE packets were being blocked.

For the great news, I can now connect with my vista laptop through vpn to my server, I can even connect with my droid x (only if I put it in wifi mode, 3g/4g don't seem to work)

For the bad news, I cannot browse the network when the VPN is up, however since I have network connections on my laptop I can browse those when they reconnect.  I think lack of browsing is due to some other ports not being open or netbios/netbui.  I am still looking into it.

Here is the part that really sucks, when I disconnect the VPN connection and try to reconnect it gets stuck at the verifying password stage.  The router logs indicate that GRE is again being blocked.  This continues until I reboot the router.  Then things are good once again for one connection.

This same scenerio occured regardless if it was the vista laptop or the droid x that connected the first time.  In fact the router is so hosed that the FTP connection which had worked great from either remote connection is hosed.  I have to bring down the FPT SERVER and restart it.

Has anyone ever heard of this before?  it certainly sounds like a firmware thing but I have not found any information or of others having the same problems.

Thanks for any help that anyone can give.

I might have inadvertantly solved the reboot problem for the router.  I installed netbuei on the server and verified that it had netbios protocal, then installed netbios on the vista laptop and this morning was able to log in 4 times through the vpn.  Now having issues browsing the network through the vpn which is a common problem from what I can find.  Any help would be appreciated.
