You do have to remember that the Synology DS209 costs over twice what the DNS-323 costs.  It is a feature-rich box and had great performance as well.

The DS209 Synology...

It costs twice and it seems from a couple of reviews that the transfer speed is around 30-35 Mb/s. So, it's not three times faster then the DNS-323. I have been able to get occasional speeds of 29 MB/s out of the 323, and from various tests it seems the mean could be 23 MB/s (or over 18 MB/s anyway). The DS210+ could be 3 times faster, but it costs $500. And the "economical" version (DS210j) costs half of it with 32 MB/s for files over 512 MB. Correct me if I'm wrong.

From my Synology DS209 gigabit with standard 1500 byte frames.

Running warmup...
Running a 500MB file write on drive y: once...
------------------------------
Average (W):     29.01 MB/sec
------------------------------
Running a 500MB file read on drive y: once...
------------------------------
Average (R):     54.05 MB/sec
------------------------------

From my DNS-323, firmware 1.08, gigabit with standard 1500 byte frames.

Running warmup...
Running a 500MB file write on drive y: once...
------------------------------
Average (W):     10.93 MB/sec
------------------------------
Running a 500MB file read on drive y: once...
------------------------------
Average (R):     14.14 MB/sec
------------------------------

I paid $129 for the DNS-323 and $299 for the DS209.

I'll take the performance of the Synology for the difference in price.  After I get done adding drives, the price difference isn't all that great for the added performance.  The Synology also seamlessly supports as many USB disks as you like, multiple printers, UPS, etc.

If you want more than about 15mbytes/sec transfers, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.  I have a DNS-321, DNS-323, and a Synology DS209.  Although the Synology was $300, it's about three-four times as fast as the DNS-323 and has many more options.  The Synology with a pair of 2TB drives will set you back $500 right now, NewEgg has 2TB drives for $99. :)

What gunrunerjohn says is true.  I've complained I get about 10-15mb/sec and have been told i have issues with my network.  Everyone else noticed this as well (before and after my post about a year ago), but there are about 2-3 guys that say everyone else has issues (and they seem to have an interest or connection to dlink).
Anyways, the synology is fast and I've been eyeing the new ds210j.  I've been looking at the 209+II or 209+. I can't seem to find those anymore but the 210 is out.  What's the diff?

I ordered two 2T WD Elements drive for $99 at Amazon.  I'm going to recycle the case and use the WD20EADS for the synology.
