Hi there.  My DIR-628 has H/W: A2 F/W:1.11.
I have never updated the firmware.

I used to have good wired connections with my old Winxp desktop.  However, the wired connection became really slow after I purchased a custom desktop with Window 7 for the old winXP.

Therefore, I decided to unplug the router power 2 days ago since I was tired of unplugging the power everytime the wired speed became slow or no connection while the wireless speed worked totally fine.

And now, I plug the power code back to the router and try to figure out how to fix this extreme slow wired connection.  However, I find "D-Link" blinking in GREEN and the rest of LEDs are off.  There is no connection between desktop and router.  I do not even have a chance to access the router 192.168.0.1.  So I press the reset button in the back for 10 seconds, and that does not help.  The "D-Link" LED is still blinking in green.

I have 2 questions,
1. The router is supposed to be in default setting.  What should I do to make it working again?

2. The wired speed becomes very inconsistence and slow after I got window7 desktop instead of the old winXP desktop.  Am I supposed to upgrade the firmware for fixing the wired connection while the wireless is working totally fine?  (I heard a rumor that upgrading the firmware from 1.11 to 1.2x will brick the router)

I am desperate to fix the above 2 problems!
Thanks in advance!!

Since you state that you have tried to do the reset and it failed, your router sounds like it is "dead."

I am not a professional and no way will give any guarantees or warranty.  Like you I own this model of router.  Pretty much I tinker with computers and components a lot.

The best possible way to answer this is to this question is to update the firmware.

Question 1:
Since you have a router attached to your cable/DSL modem, your internet provider (Comcast, Cox Comm, etc) more than likely won't help you out.  It won't hurt to ask.  But the best way to answer this question is to ask someone who seems to know, or pay a professional.

Question 2:
1.  Go to :http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DIR-628&tab=3.firmware
2.  Download the latest firmware and unzip it.
3.  Log on to your router and select the Tools Tab.
4.  Select the Firmware Option on the Left-hand side.
5.  Then, in the middle of the Firmwares option, "Firmware Upgrade" Select the browse to find where
you unzipped the firmware you've downloaded.
6. Select the ".bin" file, normally you hit the Ok button
7. Once you've selected your file, click on the "upload" button.

This will flash the router's firmware. Read all the information that you see.  Normally it will do it's thing and reboot itself.  There will be a warning where all the settings will go to default (like when you first purchased the router).  You need to be familiar with setting up the router after this step.

If all this sounds complicated, you'll need to find a "geek" or a computer savy person and ask them for help.  If all else fails call up Geek Squad or any equivalent service.  Remember the saying, "You get what you pay for."  I hope this helps in any way.
