RCN Says its All DLinks Fault
« on: August 04, 2010, 12:33:26 PM »

That I cant get wireless internet. I got the router 4 months ago and never had a problem with it. Ive power cycled everything and called my ISP... and Im not paying for tech support from DLink.

Is this a trend? Does anyone have any suggestions?

So we need more info besides what RCN says. How are you connected. Wired or wireless? Is the ISP DSL or cable? If wireless what modes are you using? What FW is currnetly loaded on the 4500?

FW info is on the Device info section of the web page for the 4500. We need to see what wireless mode and band your using. I presume it's mixed and at 2.4Ghz? Lets know.

Hmm, is there a trend? Well yes and no. Its kind of like asking if there is a trend of flat tires. Yes, but the reasons are wide and mostly unrelated. First some basic info

Hold down Windows Key+ R > Http://192.168.0.1
User: <blank>
Password: admin

Just copy and past that whole frame and "STATISTICS" on the left column, and that will get us started. Now if we/you find out its with the ISP, you may want to try here:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/rcn

When posting there, try to include your modem signal levels, and if requested, logs. To do that:

Hmm, is there a trend? Well yes and no. Its kind of like asking if there is a trend of flat tires. Yes, but the reasons are wide and mostly unrelated. First some basic info

Hold down Windows Key+ R > Http://192.168.100.1
Look for a tab or option for Signal. Copy + Paste.

Does FW= Firmware? On my router's screen for device info it says firmware version 1.21NA

Wireless mode... I dont know what that means.
Band?...  same. I dunno.

And that little windows key + r thing didnt work. Invalid password.

Yes FW is Firmware. For wireless mode and band, Look in Basic and Wireless and you will see something listing like Mixed Mode, a/b/g/n. Look for Band and will either be 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz, default is 2.4Ghz.
If your running 1.21NA, this is known to have issues with some people regarding random wired and wireless internet connection router reboots, hangs and disconnects.

It seems that this could be the case here. I would update to v1.22NA as it resolves the v1.21 issues.

Just try without a password. Or use what ever password you set up while configuring the router. As for what things mean...google it? Or click on the Help tab once you get into the router.

Yes yea.  :P ::grin:: I noobed.

You try to work 12 hours supporting a WRT54g2 POS and then come here. Hah! Their default passwords are admin and username are blank (Linksys don't even check usernames). But he could have changed the password too. Alot of the configuration CD these days ask you to for "security reasons" which is BS, since if you can crack the WPA..a 8 digit password on the router is kids stuff.

Do I know how? Yea. Have I done it? No. WEP, yea, thats cake. WPA is still time consuming enough to make it less fun. I can poke around and see what progs my friends suggest.
