LAN ports blocked?
« on: August 11, 2010, 06:20:28 PM »

Hi,
I am new here. I have a question about my new DIR-655. I am running Hardware Version: A4 and Firmware Version: 1.32NA. I only have the 655 and a Motorola Surfboard for networking hardware.
I use Synergy http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/ to connect my laptop to my htpc. The laptop is on 11.g and the PC is wired. Synergy worked up to the day I setup my 655.
I have tried forwarding the default port synergy uses to no avail. (TCP 24800, no UPD can be specified.)
I have also disabled both Windows Firewalls on both machines just for grins.
DLink Support told me to forward ports and put the computers in DMZ. DMZ refers to the Internet/WAN, and you can only put 1 machine in DMZ at a time - so that didn't help.

Does anyone know of any settings that would be blocking this software? It simply won't connect.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
John

Hi,

What OS versions are you using on each pc ?  Are both pc's using the same subnet ?  Do you have UPnP enabled on the router (or vice versa)....

Also check the advanced wireless settings like WLAN partition (I have mine unchecked)

etc...

htpc is Windows 7 Ultimate. Laptop is XP Pro. They are both on dhcp from the 655 and on the same subnet. UPnP is enabled. I enabled WLan Partitions and I am getting the same behavior, I will turn it back off.
I appreciate your input so far SD1!!
Is there some sort of software that could identify ports being blocked on the LAN side?

Here are the logs on Synergy, they don't seem to offer much feedback for my networking issue.

My best bet would be to ask around on the Synergy forum.

Only thing that comes to mind about the DIR is try changing some of the 655 firewall settings/SPI etc. Also, does Synergy require multicast?

Thanks for the reply Eddie!
At first, I didn't think Synergy would have active forums because it's latest release is from 2006. But, per your suggestion, I looked and found that someone has resurrected the project and they are calling in "Synergy+". It is more recent. Initial attempts haven't worked and I will keep digging.

side note: my ping's now reply from 208.x.x.x subnets. They used to be 192.x.x.x with my old router. My public IP is a 70.x.x.x. Please see this pic.

Anyone know what is causing this?
Thanks,
John

i have not really figured out how to fix being able to access by a windows host name (i want to say it has something to do with netbios) i generally just use the ip address and set dhcp reservation on the router so that the ip is always the same, that is a lot more reliable.

tracert htpc might give you a better idea of what is happening.

also that crazy ip your getting when using the hostname htpc is probably where your original problems with the firewall are becoming a problem it's like its going out to the internet to get to your other computer, i would say just use the machines local ip instead of typing htpc.

lol yeah i know what is happening i had the same problem to. sometimes when you try to access htpc it will not work so that is when it trys your dns server which you have set as opendns which is why you get that 208.67 ping responce because of how open dns works.

like i said eariler use your other computers local ip address 192.168.0.2 or whatever it happens to be and make sure to set up dhcp reservation so your local ip wont change.

You were right, I changed htpc to its IP and it worked. Nice!
Thanks for the info on tracert, but now that I know, I don't like the fact that my computer names are visible.
I can ping the myself at 208.x.x.x and the 70.x.x.x from my isp.
I changed the settings on Advanced Network/Enable WAN Ping Respond and I can still ping both. :( Has anyone else checked this setting?

well what do you mean where are your computer names visable that you don't like?

visable to who? they should not be visable outside of your network.

opendns will show anything you type you can ping kissmybutt and it will show it back to you, its just how it works.

if you ping the 208 that isn't really pinging you its pinging there server its a weird way that opendns has it set up so that everything does indeed go through them so you can do web filtering through them.

anyhthing that you ping while using opendns will show there server ipaddress instead of the ipaddress of the server.

i don't know off hand if you can trust pinging your external ip from your computer as a way to make sure your not pingable.

you can use http://network-tools.com i think it automatically fills in your ip address

I appreciate your replies to my post.

As far as the opendns you mentioned - I haven't done a thing with that. Is that just how this router behaves? I just have everything on dhcp.

I do see that http://network-tools.com can't ping me or complete a tracert, it stops at the 8th hop instead of completing at 11. So that is a relief... However, it still seems odd that I get the weird ping replies and tracert runs 11 hops instead of 1.
Thanks!

i assume the easy fix would be to disable enhanced dns services under setup/ manual internet  and see if that fixes it.

You got it! Ping and tracert are how they used to be.
