Can connect to some websites but not most others
« on: August 16, 2010, 09:50:50 AM »

I am able to connect to a few websites, but not others. For example, I can connect to speedtest.net, microsoft.com or google.com, but not lifehacker.com, youtube.com or yahoo.com. The majority of sites will not connect, but I simply get an error message saying the site is not available.

I have three computers running Windows 7 and two iPod Touches. They all have the same issue, and it happens both on wired and wireless connections. Using IE8, Chrome, Firefox or Safari also makes no difference. The strange part is that I can connect with no problem if I use Hotspot Shield, although I obviously cannot do this with an iPod. I have tried tweaking my router (D-Link DIR-655) to no avail, so far, as well as my OpenDNS settings and Windows firewall. What to do? It's extremely maddening.

Yep, I have done that (reset my modem) a few times too, though I neglected to mention it. I have also rebooted the router and computers more than once.

Check your DNS server settings (check to see if they are static entries) and try enabling/disabling DNS relay on the DIR-655.

Hi ntwiebe,

Have you fully patched your Windows 7 Computers? Added Java 6, Update 21? Added Adobe Flash Player and Shockwave Player?

Connect to the modem directly, see if that works OK. If so, you may have a LAN or router misconfiguration.

to me i would think its a dns issue if you ping youtube.com what do you get as an ip?

i got this
Pinging youtube.com [74.125.127.93]

if you type in that ip instead of youtube.com and you can get to youtube than it is a problem with your dns not resolving.

you can always try going back to your isp dns server for troublehsooting purposes if your having problems with opendns
