I must be networking ******ed or something because this just wont work.  I used to have my 323 connected to my linksys wireless router but I decided to move it so that it is directly connected to my iMac.  My iMac is still connecting to the internet wirelessly (cant move the cable modem or router) but I would like to connect to the 323 though the ethernet (because it is much faster than wifi transfers).

The mac wont find the 323 automatically like it does when its connected to the router.  It also gives its self a self assigned ip address of 169.254.70.161.  Ugggh.

Likely because you don't have a DHCP server enabled. Either hard code the IP for the Mac and the DND323 or enable the DHCP server.

Ok.  How do i enable the DHCP server on the iMac?

No idea, but you can enable it on the DNS323. Personally, I'd just assign static IP addresses to both devices. Just make sure they are in the same subnet and it is not the same subnet that you use for you other network segment.

Ok, Ill hook it back up to my router and turn on DHCP from there.  The weird thing is that iTunes can see that the 323 is sharing, but it wont access it.  At least there is some form of communication going on there.

My wireless ip is 192.168.2.1, the subnet for it is 255.255.255.0.  Should i manually assign the imac something like 10.10.10.2 and 255.0.0.0 for the subnet?

Just curious as well.  Would the OP also need a crossover cable as the pin outs are different than going to a router?

Probably not, modern network interface cards detect and handle that automatically.

To the OP: Why complicate things by adding DHCP to the mix? Just assign the NAS a static IP and put your Mac network connection on the same subnet.

Try restarting the DNS-323 and then restarting your Mac.  I would be interested to know it that helps.
