DNS 323 with SBS 2003
« on: August 17, 2010, 02:59:44 PM »

I did a search on SBS 2003 and saw comments but some were old and I'm not sure any totally applied to my question...

We have SBS 2003 running Raid 1. I want to get the DNS-323 with a couple 1T drives for backup. I don't care if I manually have to copy files to the NAS.

Is it going to be compatible with my Domain Network configuration? And, will the drives be seen from workstations as network drives or not.??? Or am I going to be able to make it show up as a drive but lose all features in the process? Many questions I'm not even sure of what to ask yet? SBS 2003 is new to me to begin with. We are just beginning to migrate from an XP peer to peer.

Thanks.

There's no reason you can't access the NAS from your server.  It will show up as a workgroup share, not a domain server, but that doesn't affect your access.  It will be exactly like having a share on a workstation on your network and connecting to it through the server.

I currently use my DNS-323 to backup a Windows Server 2008 system - it does a pretty good job - however I would question the advisability of migrating from an XP peer LAN to SBS2003, that is now an obsolete operating system, and you're probably not going to see much more support from it from Microsoft.

SBS2008 is available, why not consider that instead?

I think he already has SBS 2003 installed. :)

Yes, SBS 2003 is installed already. (We ended up going this route because of some compatibility problems with softare.) Plan on doing upgrades down the line to 2008.

Thanks everyone for responses. Quite helpful.

I was hesitate to go with the DNS-32* but now feel it should work out for us.

I recognise that, but, I don't know if you noticed that he said he's now starting to migrate from a Win XP peer LAN.

SBS2003's built-in backup is a pain in the butt to use - and if you don't use it the built-in reports will keep nagging you about your backups, even if you have another backup system in place.

My backups are done using the DNS-323's built-in backup scheduler, which does not allow for incremental backups, so I'm doing a full backup every time, it may be slow as disks go, but it is significantly quicker than the tape that was there before, so I'm a happy camper.
