FTP Server settings - HELP!
« on: August 05, 2010, 10:57:19 AM »

I have a DNS-321 NAS connected to the DIR-825 Router. I'm having problems connecting to the FTP server from outside. I don't have problems connecting from inside the network so I think is something with the router. So far, these are my settings.

DNS-321
- FTP server using port 21
- DDNS enabled and connected to myhostname.dlinkddns.com

DIR-825 (REV B firmware 2.02)
- Virtual Server enabled pointing to my NAS IP address, TCP protocol and using port 21 in both public and private ports.
- DDNS enabled and connected to myhostname.dlinkddns.com
- Firewall settings: Enable SPI checked, TCP endpoint independent checked

My Dlinkddns.com account is active and running. The IP address in the ddns match my current external IP address in the router.

I remember reading that DDNS uses port 81 but I can't find the source. I have read also another user in the forum pointing that the new 2.03 firmware fixes some ftp issues. Any idea why I'm unable to connect to the FTP server from outside? Are there any incorrect settings in my set up?

Thanks,

Whenever troubleshooting, disable SPI first and keep it disabled during your testing.  SPI has a tendency to squash incoming connections.

Instead of using Virtual Server assignment, use port forwarding instead...  That is if your incoming port is 21 (FTP by default).  If you have assigned your incoming port to something like 30 (ftp://myhostname.dlinkddns.com:30) then you use Virtual Server to redirect the port connection to port 21 inside your NAS.

Thanks for your reply. I tried your recommendations and no luck. I have also updated the firmware to 2.03NA to see if that helps but nothing changed.

This is what I'm getting from outside:

"ERROR
Proxy Error

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The proxy encountered an error.

Please try again later. "

I have reviewed my settings millions of times and I don't see anything wrong. What else you think it could be?

I tried before with port 1025 and 21 using virtual server and no luck. I guess this should be similar to what you are suggesting.

I think, the port 20 is absolutely necessary in addition to the 21 for an active ftp.
If it does'nt work with that, I can show you my screenshots.
I have a linksys NAS200 behind this router.

Thanks for posting your settings, was really helpful but I'm still unable to access the FTP from outside. I put my settings same as yours but nothing changed.

I've contacted dyn service staff and they told that they need ports 80 and 8245 open in order for the ddns account to work. I see that you have an option in your NAS to specify the http port, which you have it as 80. I don't have such option in my D-link DNS-321 NAS, so I'm not sure which port the NAS has opened for ddns.

I sent an email to d-link support today. ???

weird  :-\
I think your port 8245 is redirected to the NAS too ?
have you tried from another dyn provider such dyndns.com ? just to make sure that the problem was'nt an issue with the dlink dyn service ...

I tried using dyndns.com and still experiencing the same problem. I guess we have ruled out another possibility.
