cannot get email alerts to work
« on: February 21, 2009, 04:33:02 PM »

I have a MS Exchange Server on this network, but can't seem to get any settings to work as far as testing email alerts. (it is Small Business Server 2008)

E-MAIL ALERT SETTINGS :
  Login Method : Account
      User Name :   <myusername>
      Password :   <password>
  SMTP Server :   mail.<domainname>.com
  Sender E-mail :   <my email account>
  Receiver E-mail :   administrator@<domainname>.com

where domainname has been replaced with my actual domain name.

I have tried changing the domain name to .local and the actual server name, the username with the domain name.

All tests result in Failure

One additional note. After reading this post http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=3425.0, it looks like the DNS-323 has the same problem after upgrading the firmware to 1.06.

My DNS-321 firmware was upgraded to 1.01 as soon as I received the unit.

I changed the firmware version back to 1.00 - but no luck.

Oddly, I can use CDO to send an email internally using vbscript when some event occurs, and the server sends me a report each day using email.

I guess after both drives fail, I will realize there is a problem. It would be nice to get a notification after the first one fails so the Raid can be rebuilt.

This just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser. :-\

When I set the firmware at 1.00, I tried my yahoo account - use smtp.mail.yahoo.com -  and it worked!
Great. Then I upgraded the firmware again to 1.01 and the email alert test failed with the same yahoo settings.

So I reset the firmware back to 1.00 and the e-mail alerts work. So I am leaving it there for now.

I don't like having to use an external account, so perhaps they will fix this function in the next firmware release.

I'm using e-mail alerts with a gmail account and firmware 1.01.  I haven't had any problems.

Thanks for the reply.

Just to reconfirm, I upgraded to firmware 1.01, and the settings remained the same in e-mail alerts. It definitely does NOT work using the exact same settings for my yahoo account and firmware version 1.01. The test fails.

It could be the way that yahoo authenticates versus gmail, but at any rate it does not work in yahoo.

Also, in v1.01 (I will create a separate post about this), user permissions go haywire. As soon as you create a user on the Advanced>User/Groups page, and create a share for that user on the Network Access Settings page, the "All accounts" check box disappears on the Network Access Settings page, and all of the previously created shares using "All accounts" disappear.

I have seen a few posts that point to gmail as the most reliable way to get the emails to work.

I finally got my 321 to provide email notifications with gmail.

Did you set your user type to Anonymous?  I did that and it started sending via my COX email account.

Hello,
Just set the DNS-321 up today. I could not get the email notification to work despite setting it up exactly like my OUTLOOK account. I got the email feature working by setting it to 'ANONYMOUS' and setting the SMTP SERVER to my email SMTP server. Used my email address in sender and recipient. Works fine now.

Anyone have success with a msn or live email account? Both use SSL connections to the smtp.live.com server?:P

I was having trouble getting email alerts to work on DNS-323 with firmware 1.08. I tried all the suggestions above with to and from emails the same, and using ISP email etc. None worked.

However, then I used the IP address for my mail server - SUCCESS!
