A/V HDD WD10EVDS?
« on: September 06, 2010, 06:29:05 PM »

I am looking to setup 2 individual HDD's (no RAID) and was going to use my WD10EARS and WD10EADS drives, but from reading through posts they do not seem to be the best choice.  Would an A/V drive, the WD10EVDS, work OK with the DNS-321?  They say they are geared towards PVRs and media servers...

After looking at this forum more and at the WD site, I think it will be fine.  At the bottom of the http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=615 it states:

"Advanced Format Technology (AF)  - Technology being adopted by WD and other drive manufacturers as one of multiple ways to continue growing hard drive capacities. AF is a more efficient media format that enables increased areal densities. (EURS models only)"

So there is no AF technology on the drive.

It just seems like I'm getting ripped off but buying a WD1002FBYS or some other Enterprise drive for an extra 30% for the same size drive.

Maybe it's time to go to Samsung and the HD154UI.  It's sad because I've been using WD since I bought a 20MB drive (I never thought I'd fill it at the time...) for a Packard Bell.  Brand loyalty only goes so far...  Anyway just thinking "out loud".

I love the Samsung drives.  I have two of them (not as a RAID) and they are quiet and work great for streaming media, even BluRay titles like Avatar to my PS3 for display on the big TV.

Thanks for the reply.  They (HD154UI) are on sale right now for $66.29, so I bought one to try.

Here's the link, if interested...

I have one of those HD154UI drives already and you will get no complaints from me.  I'm a fan.
