Hello,
I'm looking for some conceptual assistance setting up a VPN.  My purpose for the VPN is primarily to use its Internet connection when I'm on the go.  I'd like to have my own VPN, instead of something like HotspotShield.  I would like to be able to connect from a laptop and an iPhone.

I have an existing wireless network set up using a DIR-615 (v2.23), configured with routing / port forwarding rules; I'd prefer not to have to migrate these to a new router.

I also have a DIR-130 (v1.12) that I am trying to use to set up the VPN.

After talking to a few folks, I've come up with the following:

"Internet" (cable modem)
     |
DIR-130 WAN port (192.168.2.1); VPN server 192.168.2.2; subnet 255.255.0.0
     |
DIR-130 LAN port (192.168.2.1)
(DMZ 192.168.2.9)
     |
DIR-615 WAN (192.168.2.9; subnet 255.255.255.0; gateway 192.168.2.1)
     |
(existing)
DIR-615 LAN (192.168.0.2; subnet 255.255.0.0), running DHCP server


I haven't been successful in getting this to work.  I'm not sure if my topology is correct, or even what type of VPN I should be selecting.

I'd appreciate any advice, hints, or suggestions.

Double NAT'ing is a bad solution and I would avoid it if at all possible.  You are going to want your DIR-615 to be in the DMZ of your DIR-130 if you do this however.

A PPTP VPN would be easiest.

How far have you gotten, what works and what doesn't?

Hi, thank you for your response.

I decided to back up for a moment and make sure I could create the basic VPN connection - I took the DIR-615 out of the picture and am just using the DIR-130.  I was able to connect to my VPN; however I was not able to access 'the Internet' once connected.  (When I'm physically connected to the router, I'm able to access the Internet, so I know the connection is good).

My settings on the DIR-130:

Router IP: 192.168.2.1
Subnet: 255.255.0.0
Enable DNS Relay
Enable DHCP (192.168.2.10-.15)

VPN settings
Enable, PPTP
VPN Server IP: 192.168.2.2
Remote IP Range: 192.168.2.20-25
auth: MSCHAPv2
MPPE encryption mode: 128bit
auth database (group 1)

Do I need to configure any routing / firewall settings?

Any suggestions?
