Reinstall question and wish list
« on: September 14, 2010, 06:35:18 PM »

Having spent most of the weekend converting a Vista machine to Win 7, opening firewall security to a selected IP range, restoring the DNS-323 to the factory default settings for FW 1.08, re-adding all settings manually and finally being able to map a network drive using the UNC notation (if that is the proper term), I have one question and a suggested list of things that I think would help new users.

Question:  Are there any thoughts as to why I can still not see the DNS-323 in Win 7 when I select the option See Full Map  when in the Network Sharing Center?  I could see the unit after the Win 7 install and before I restored the default factory settings.

Desired additional documents:  1. Best Practices for DNS-323 Owners document;  2. An addition to the option that will download configuration settings that will create a simple test file showing all the settings (I previously reloaded my configuration settings, but gunrunnerjohn convinced me that it was better manually).  If we had a list and a reload process that worked, that would be fantastic.

Thank you all for sharing.

Peace

I see both the DNS-321 and DNS-323 in my network map in Windows 7, and I did nothing special to allow them to show up.

To see the DNS-323 with the Full Map on Windows 7 make sure that LLTD is enabled.  It is on the Advanced page in the DNS-323 web GUI.  Please note the comment about performance.  I have not measured without/without the setting so I don't know the impact.

The DNS-323 should be visible in the Windows7 full map, even without LLTD - Windows7 may not know what it is, (that it is a NAS) but it should be visible - if only at the bottom as a discovered device.

For what it's worth - the Windows7 network maps are neither accurate nor reliable- I've been able to get different maps on two identical laptops, positioned side by side, and connected to the same network through the same wireless access point, and neither map was an accurate representation of the network - the internet gateway is always shown connected to a switch other than the one it is actually connected to.

I'm currently at my desktop and the map displayed doesn't show my wireless access point - not withstanding the fact that it can see another Windows7 system, that's connected wirelessly using that access point.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Chriso-  LLTD is disabled, probably done at one point for better security and speed.  It just seemed odd that one time the map showed the name and a picture of the DNS unit.  After a reset to factory settings, it was no longer there.  I will have to search old notes to see if it was enabled originally and I failed to enable it after reset.  (One more reason for having a list of the settings.)

Fordem- Your information is also helpful.  I was able to may a Win 7 drive to the device so I got what I needed.

Thank you all.

I don't trust the Windows 7 maps, they're just "eye candy".  Mine is wrong on any machine I run it from.

I totally agree.  Besides the only place you can see this is if you click on "Full Map", it isn't even the way you use day to day.

I'm sure Microsoft has something in mind for that functionality, but it's only "half-baked" right now.

If I stand on a stool I have a better network overview than I do by using the Windows network map. :)

I love it!  Depending on the LTTD setting the "Full Map" changes for me, but it is never really correct.  If I actually used it I might go to the wrong house looking for my network. :)

This is fun to read and it is nice to know that it may not be something I did.

I now have the Win 7 machine being backed-up with Second Copy, thanks to someone on this list, and my Mac backup is done in 20 seconds while I sleep.  If you can believe it, I am a happy camper concerning system functionality.  Documentation is something else.

Will some power person please mark this closed?
