2 615s on home network not working
« on: November 04, 2010, 09:20:27 AM »

Hi

I'm having some trouble setting up 2 D-link 615 routers on my home network. I'll explain a bit about how I'm set up and then what the problem is.

The first router is my main router and is plugged into my phone line. It used to have my mac G5 [using as a home server] connected to it by ethernet and all other machines by wireless and is working fine.

I have a studio with 2ft thick walls as part of my house and I have added another router in here so I can get a stronger wireless signal in this room. The G5 is also now connected to that router as it is in the studio. The second router is plugged into an ethernet socket which is wired back to the LAN on the first router this is the same socket the G5 was previously connected by so I know it definitely works.

Having followed some instructions online, I have done the following:

Changed the IP of the secondary router to 192.168.0.2 [the main one is 192.168.0.1]

Changed the SSID name of the secondary router to match the first

Changed the wireless password of the second to match the first

Changed the wireless channel of the second to match the first

Disabled DHCP on the secondary router.

The LAN of the first router is plugged into the WAN of the second and the G5 is now plugged into the LAN of the second.

However, the routers come up as separate wireless networks and despite the control panel of the secondary router saying the internet is online, i cannot connect via wireless or ethernet.

The G5 says it cannot connect because it has a self assigned IP address

The first router is working as expected.

What have I missed or done wrong?  It's probably important to point out that I don't know a great deal about networking so I may be a bit slow on the uptake.

Thanks in advance for any help

I seem to have solved it.

For anyone who has the same problem, the second router needed to be set to AP [access point] mode.

However the 2 routers show up separately in the airport menu. They are still connected to the same network but show up separately.

Is that how it will work? It's not a problem, I was just under the impression it would just show as one.

Well you need to change the access point on the router acting as the access point. Perhaps I am misunderstanding though
