DGL 4500 Finally Stable?
« on: November 13, 2010, 07:37:15 AM »

After 3 hours with a tech house call and 2 more hours on the phone with my ISP, I finally figured out it was my router. I have had this router for about 2 years now and completley forgot about firmware updates because I never had any trouble.

Well 1 week ago my internet speeds through router were 2 down and .02 up. Finally came to conclusion that it was my router DGL 4500. I bypassed router and speed were constant at 25 down and 2 up.

On wednesday, I did the 1.23 firmware update. assigned DHCP reserv, turned off gamefuel and still slow speeds!

Get up today, Saturday morning and all my speeds are back.
Can anybody tell me why my router would act this way?
Thanks!!

What ISP Service do you have, i.e. DSL or cable? You absolutly positive your seeing the same speeds when the 4500 is off line? What Model of Internet modem do you have? If you have cable, make sure the line doesn't have any splitters and if you need them keep them to a minimum or find a good signal amp. If you have DSL and the modem has an internal router built in, thats know to cause connection issues, specially with gaming and it's recommended to put the modem into bridge or transparent mode so that the 4500 router will do all the networking and you can take advantage of all the good features it has. I have 2 4500's one a friend is using and they both work great.

Do you remember what firmware you had on the 4500? There was only one version that would hang or randomly reboot the router. All other FW version were good. What HW version is the 4500? A1 or A2?

I would review the Gameing and Gamefuel sticky. They are tried and true and work well for me and others on this board and off board. Let me know if you need help setting them up.

Still pulling good speeds currently after reset and firmware upgrade.

Ah, should have kept v1.15, it's a good version. V1.23 is good too. I presume that doing a factory reset could have done the same with out the update. If our speeds are good and stable...go with it or check out and use the GameFuel sticky. Get ahold of LookInTooMyEyes on here for PS3 help. I'll be posting a guide similar to the one already posted. This one is for PS3. Let us know how it goes.
