Add 2nd drive
« on: November 13, 2010, 01:25:13 PM »

Currently running single Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB as Volume 1 in standard config in a 2 month old DNS-321 - trying to add Volume 2 - identical drive.  After installing the new drive and booting up I do not receive a format prompt.  When trying to access the admin page via browser or Easy Search, it hangs, either way.  I have tried restore factory defaults several times.  Running static ip so no conflict.

When I remove the new Volume 2, I can then access admin page/configuration without problem although it eventually hangs while running through any configuring.  My first though is a defective drive.  However, when I first received the 321 I set up it up with 2 x 1 TB Spinpoints.  Vol 2 went bad after a few weeks.  So this new drive is a replacement for that.  Is there an issue the the 321 as opposed to the drive itself?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Test the drive off-line on a PC with the Samsung diagnostics.

Is it possible the new drive has partitions or data already on it that is casuing issues?

Try deleting all partitions on the new drive via some other system (yes, a pain).

If that fails, try writing junk data to the drive.  I'm wondering if it has some boot block info that is being processed by the dns-321?

Good luck,

Thanks for the input.  The drive was new - not formatted.  I pulled this drive and formatted in a pc - no problem, so any potential partition etc is gone, if in fact that was the problem.  After reinstalled in the 321, same issue - no prompt.  Get to Web UI but will not load config page.  When I pull the drive and just run single volume, again can load config page, but again eventually hangs.  Thoughts?
