Router Recommendations - Done with DLINK !!!
« on: November 21, 2010, 11:10:08 PM »

I am FED UP and tired of dealing with Dlink Hong Kong and this POS DGL4500 router. In the past I have used Linksys routers out of the box with no issues whatsoever. My SSID isnt showing...connections are slow and all the Aholes at HK support have to say is that  "You are experiencing the problem because you are a Foreigner. Chinese do not have this problem".

Well the service sucks here, the router is a POS and from what it seems loads of people are having issues. Xbox support HK is also telling people to avoid this router.

What are my options? I game a lot on PS3 and 360.

Thanks

Where are you located? U.S.? Overseas?

First off not everyone is having issues with this router.

What ISP service do you have? DSL or cable? If on DSL, does the DSL modem have it's own internal router. There is known connection issues if this is the case.

What firmware version is currently loaded?

Have you tried shutting off ALL wireless devices, then powering up the 4500 and one wireless device to see if you can see it? You might need to configure the wireless mode as well. What wireless devices are you trying to connect to it and what wireless modes are supported by those devices? I presume you haven't done any configuration of the 4500 so it should be broadcasting mixed mode. I recommend configuring the wifi for G mode only at 2.4Ghz. Set a name that you know that you will recognize and leave the security open for testing.

Are there any other wifi routers or access point devices in your area? There could be interference.

Help us help you. Then if we can seem to get you going then you can make judgements about this router.

All others i've helped enjoy this router greatly.

Thanks for the response.

I am running 1.15 FW I think. Its the one before the 1.20. I managed to get the SSID stuff fixed but the main issue is every few minutes the connection seems to drop. I have this router for a 100mb line and it is only used for my X360 and PS3 wired + 2 consoles that are in another area (wireless). I am currently using only wired and keep getting disconnected from XBL every 15-20 mins.

I have Gamefuel off as I don't really need it to prioritise traffic since this line is strictly for gaming. I am a US serviceman stationed overseas in Asia. We have very stable fibre lines here and I know my ISP is not the problem. I just picked up a Cisco E3000 today and it works fine.

It would be nice if I could get this 4500 fixed but so far support here (Asia) has given me the most ridiculous BS and the guys at the store I bought it from called me a fool for buying Dlink. They insisted that I should have opted for Netgear or Tenda.

Thanks

Is your ISP service a Cable or DSL line? If your seeing wireless disconnect then I might presume that it would be other interference in the area. For gaming I would recommend using wired for gaming at all times. However A buddy of mine has experienced good Wireless gaming over G mode only at 2.4Ghz.

I recommend using Gamefuel as it what helps greatly for xbox and other gaming services. Even if you only have 4 consoles on the same system and network and not prioritizing the traffic might give results such as your seeing.

Review my gaming and gamefuel sticky and give it a try. Seems to work pretty much and is what I run with 2 xboxes wired. My buddy has 2 wired and one wireless over G only at 2.4Ghz.

There is nothing wrong with the 4500 and the FW v1.15. Thats a very stable FW version as I have the same version here. I feel that the 4500 just needs to be set up and configured for gaming.

If your connecting to XBL with out initial issues then I presume you have cable internet? or do you have DSL? DSL modems have internal routers that can hamper connections to gaming services and it's been my experience to bridge them and let the 4500 router do all the traffic management.

Just because the E3000 works doesn't mean the 4500 wont. Each router is typically the same however all there features and options that are setup out of the box are different at some point. Some user setup is needed to effect a better experience and connections to various services. Let us know how it goes.

I use Cable and there is no interference in the area except for a cell phone which I doubt is the issue. I am using a wired connection for the Xbox that I use regularly and it is the wired connection that is disconnecting every 20 minutes. The wired connection is through my 4500. I don't need gamefuel or even a firewall for that matter as this line is simply for my consoles and as a backup in case my main net connection is down.

I am not sure if I should upgrade to 1.23 to solve the connection drop so what do you think? Any ideas?

This is my setup
ISP Router ----> DGL4500 ----------->X360
All wired.

I read through your thread.  What do you mean your connection drops?  What does it say in the error log?  Is the router rebooting or what?  You gotta be more specific here.

If it's not rebooting or anything, then you simply don't have it configured properly.

I agree with Reinvented, there seems to be a possible configuration issue here and we'd like a bit more information and configuration set up to try and see if we an help you get the connections stable. Upgrading FW is probably not going to fix anything and you'll probably still see problems afterwards. Since you are on Cable, as I am, then setup should be good and configuration should work and I'd like you to go ahead and set up your xbox as outlined in the gaming and gamefuel sticky. You don't have to use the Firewall however I would like to see if setting up one xbox on a static IP address and a gamefuel rule do you still see the disconnection issue. We presume that you don't see the disconnect issue if you directly connect the xbox to the cable modem?

Let us know if you see any log entries regarding this as well. Follow the sticky and Let us know.

I dont have the log turned on. These are just disconnects and I need to reboot the 4500 to be able to connect again. No issues with Linksys or if connected directly to the modem.

Can you give me some specifics about your setup?  Are you using a US modeled 4500?  What about the cable modem?
