DNS-323... allowing write but not delete?
« on: December 03, 2010, 05:41:37 AM »

Hey guys,

I'm looking into getting a DNS-323 for my business which I began a few months ago.  We are basically a call center and we call countries overseas to do questionnaires with various people.  However, our clients always need the call recordings to verify quality.

Right now, I have all the agent calls being recorded on their local machines.  However, I want to start having them stored somewhere on the network in a RAID setup in case one of their machines crashes or they delete one by accident.  Also, I want them all in one location and accessible over the net in case I'm at home.  So the DNS-323 looks right up my alley.

My only question is whether it's possible to set up their machines to have such a specific access so that...

I set the location of the recordings to be "\\dlink323\recordings\agent1" for example.
And I want the recording program to begin storing all the recordings as they happen to this new location instead of locally.
And I want the agents to be able to play back their recordings if they need to hear some detail.
But I don't want them to be able to delete or overwrite any recordings.

Is it possible to set up some kind of "write" but not "delete" or "overwrite" access for files on the DNS-323?

Thanks!

You either have read or read and write access to shares on the NAS. If you have write access, this means you can also delete, overwrite and rename. Unfortunately, to be able to "write" the recordings, you will need to have "write" access to the share. Whether or not it would be possible to configure your software to login to the share, yet not have the logged in user able to access the share with write permissions, I don't know.

Depending on the number of users on your setup, I would also question the performance of streaming audio from multiple destinations to the NAS. This particular NAS isn't very fast.

Why not continue having the data stored on the local machines and automatically backed up on the NAS without the users even knowing about it?  This would provide for a backup, your remote access, and the users could still access their local content.
