Failed HD, but LED is normal? Suggestions?
« on: November 29, 2010, 12:50:11 PM »

Ok, so the other day I decided to check out the SMART info from my two WD 1TB hard drives in RAID 0, and discovered one was failing. I keep family pictures on there (6k+ currently), so I decided it was time to swap out for RAID 1, so when the drive failed I wouldn't lose anything. I was able to get all 400 GB of data off onto several of my computers and I went into the Web interface and changed everything for Raid 1 and reformatted to Raid 1, but when it all came back up it started sending me emails that one HDD had failed and the RAID was degraded.

After much swapping around of drives, and even using Fun_plug and SSH'ing into the box, it seems pretty much no matter what I use to look at things, the "bad" drive never shows up. Both the web interface and Linux on the box itself says the 2nd drive isn't even plugged in.

The problem is, the blue LED says it is OK, it's solid and blinks sometimes. It's not AMBER or DARK or anything, just normal like everything is OK.

I've already got an RMA going for the bad HD, but my concern is.... why isn't the LED showing anything wrong with the drive if everything says it's not even there? The hardware sees it, but the software doesn't. Or so it seems.

Any ideas?
