Problems with xbox live
« on: December 06, 2010, 03:57:42 PM »

I followed the instructions on the sticky step by step to configure my xbox live connection and the performance is horrible. If i go to the options menu on cod black ops and pull up my connection speed it rates between 400-500kbps. If i disconnect the router and run the cable directly to the cable modem i get 1500 to 2100kbps. I have the latest firmware installed vers 123na. Is there something i am missing or is the router defective?

I also forgot to add when i created a rule for xbox connection my xbox used 192.250.0.199. I setup the network settings on the xbox manually for the above ip also.

This is usually not my field of experienced, but have you made sure your IP is matching the xbox 360 dynamic IP you set up? Also try reseting the router to defult and do all of the rules all over, that might help. Hope your problems get resolved. FurryNutz should comment soon and help you out. After all he is the man with the furry nutz! Also Trikein were are you!.

Morning,
Let me as you a few questions first off, What ISP service do you have? Cable or DSL? How are you connecting the xbox to the router? wireless or wired? Wired is preferred. Have you set up a static IP address for the xbox in the router?

Your Gamefuel rule is correct accept you should remove the check mark for Dynamic Fragmentation and remove the Gaming rule as that option is not needed for game consoles. Specially if you have 2 or more.
You can also change the Local and Remote port TO Ranges to 3074 and give that a try. When I wrote the sticky it was using information I found from another source on the net. Resent experience and other opinions seem to agree that narrowing down the ports to the XBL port (3074) is sufficient.

Set up the Static IP in the router and make sure the xbox is set for automatic in the network settings.

If your connecting Wireless, I would use the G mode only @ 2.4GHz only. Let us know how it goes.

Also what are the firewall settings set for? Is DNS RELAY and uPNP enabled?

Whats the highest speed DL package you are paying for from your ISP. I'm buying a 10Mb connection with 1Mb up.

Have you set up a static IP address for the xbox in the router?

Your Gamefuel rule is correct, however lets remove the check mark for Dynamic Fragmentation and disable the Gaming rule as that option is not needed for game consoles.

You can also change the Local and Remote port TO Ranges to 3074 and give that a try.

If this doesn't help, I would like you to do a full factory reset on the router. After it resets, don't change anything, just connect up the xbox and get online and see if you see any improvement or not. If you do then we need to help you configure the router. Sounds like something is quite right here. I presume that connecting directly to the cable modem you get good speeds and connections?

Definitely do not set a manual IP on the xbox.  Set it's network settings to automatic then go into the router to assign it a static ip using the router's DHCP reservation option.  Make sure uPNP is enabled and uncheck dynamic fragmentation.

Just curious... is setting up a gaming rule truly necessary?  I have 2 Xbox's on my 4500 and both are Open NAT.  I only have UPnP enabled with no gamefuel settings of any kind.  Also, just letting the router assign the Xbox's an IP.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I'm simply asking because I truly don't know.  Since I only have UPnP enabled with no issues and Open NAT on both of my Xbox's.

Thanks.

To be honest I believe it helps in prioritizing the data that get send and received to the devices that are connected and set up in Gamefuel. Gamefuel prioritized the data for each device set up and depending on where the priorities are set up will dictate what device receives the priority. Maybe on a faster ISP connection, the Gamefuel rules are not needed and again maybe your setup is working well. My ISP connection is a 10Mb Down and 1Mb up max.

Gamefuel rules are not enabled by default out of the box. I learned this years ago and went searching for set up information. This is how I gathered the information in the sticky.

If your setup is working well then I would leave it. You can always save off your current configuration to file and review the Gaming and Gamefuel rule sticky and see if you notice any differences. You may or may not. I do believe on slower ISP connections that it's beneficial as 2 or more connected devices online at the same time over a slow internet connection could present speed issues. My buddy in OK had 3 boxes and sometimes they game online all at the same time. This feature comes in very handy.

Thanks, Furry.  I'll buy that.  The "prioritization" makes sense.

Ok, Let us know...maybe you can send me your save config at some point and I can load it on mine and just review and see if there is anything I can see that might effect this issue.

Again follow my sticky just don't use the Gaming with Gamefuel.

Try default factory settings first. This start by adding just the xbox to a static IP address on the 4500. Make sure you set the xbox for automatic networking. Once you get the IP set. Then add the gamefuel rule 1st following the sticky for the xbox. Don't any any rule for any other devices. Make sure everything else is set up per the sticky. Save and then reboot the 4500. Then turn on your xbox. Let us know how it goes. Will get it figured out I hope.

I suppose as a test you could try enable gaming and don't enable gamefuel and see if there is any change. If I remember, my early days with this router I think I had Gaming enabled and pointed to the IP at the xbox and it was working. Gamefuel was off. After finding more information about GameFuel and Gaming and experiences up to this point. Gaming needs to be left for PC games and applications mostly.

Start with factory reset and lets go from there. Let us know how how it goes.

Good to hear Mr CCOOK27. Glad it's working well. I sure like those settings. Please send me your config file. Just zip it up and send to my email addr listed in my profile. Will give it a review. Set the password to black or let me know what it is. I don't do anything with config files and delete them after the review. Hope you enjoy, see you online man.
