Terrible Wired Performance
« on: November 23, 2010, 10:57:04 PM »

I have a Seagate NAS on my network.  It has a 1000 base T ethernet port.  However, when I plug it into the switch on my DGL-4500, I only get about 50 kB/s reading data from the drive.  I attached a 100 base T switch to the router and have all my wired connections running through it and get throughput that you would expect from a 100 base T connection.  Is there a known issue with the switch on this router?

Haven't seen any issues like this however I can't say for sure as I don't have a NAS on my network. I do have a full Gb network starting with my modem and running thru the 4500 out to a 24port Gb switch. I presume the cable is good? Try a different one to be sure? Is this the only device with Gb connection to the 4500? What FW version is currently loaded? Let us know.

Thanks for the reply, and Happy Thanksgiving!  The Seagate NAS is the only Gigabit device on the network.  I have tried a different cable just to be sure.  The other thing that is odd about the situation is that, when connect to the 4500 switch, I can write to the NAS at full speed.  I just can't read from it at speed.  My router is running the current firmware, 1.23NA.

Interesting find here. Any chance you have external Gb switch to test and see if this happens on a different switch? I suppose you could try setting the port speed on the 4500 however I think thats only for the WAN port. By default it's set to Auto, there is 100 and 1000 however I presume changing this will effect the connection with the ISP modem. I have a new motorola SB 6120 which supports the Gb connection. Most modems only support 100Mb so you'll have to check and see. I doubt changing this will help anything on the switch side. Would be interesting to see if this happends on a different switch though. Are there any user settings for the NAS that has LAN and speed settings? Let us know.

BTW, what hardware version is your router? a1 or a2? This will be on the label underside of the router.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Hardware version is a2.  I don't have access to a Gb switch I'm afraid.  The NAS does not have any settings to adjust the speed of the ethernet port manually.  It auto configures for speeds up to 1000.  It is a very strange situation.  I've never seen anything like this before.  I guess I could plug in static IP's on my computer and on the NAS that are not on the D-Link network and hook 'em both to the Gb switch and see what kind of results I get if the traffic isn't routed by the D-Link.  Might be an interesting test. . .

Let us know how that test goes. Interesting issue for sure. Might see if you can buy an Gb switch for a couple of days then take it back for a refund.

Just a thought, how do you test the transfer speed? do you simply copy a file from your NAS drive to your computer? if so, then perhaps it's your computer that can't handle writing faster then 50mb/sec? That would explain why you can transfer from your computer to NAS drive at full speed, cause read speed is normally twice as fast..
In my tests transferring a large file to a normal hard drive is about 50-80mb/sec, but on SSD RAID0 is stable 120mb/sec which I presume is the max possible on 1gbps port.
