FTP speed
« on: December 03, 2010, 01:48:58 PM »

I have FTP configured (and apparantly working) on my new DNS-321.
I can login remotely and see the files I need to transfer.

My problem is the transfer speed thru the internet.

If I transfer the same file locally thru FTP, it takes less than 2 minutes. (350MB file).
If I attempt to transfer it thru the internet the indicated time is 1-2 HOURS!
I've never left it run for more than a few minutes.

Obviously I have something not properly configured.

I am running a Westell 2200 modem thru a Netgear gigabit switch.

The speed will depend on your internet upload speed and the download speed at the destination. It will of course be slower than accessing from within your LAN.

Thanx for the reply.
I realize the speed over the internet will not be as fast as in-house, but did you look at the numbers?

Are you suggesting 2 hours to transfer a 350MB file might be reasonable?
How long does it take you to FTP a 350MB file?

Yes I saw the numbers. What you are asking me is how long would it take me to upload a 350MB file through my internet connection and download it somewhere else simultaneously. It wouldn't surprise me if it did take that time. It will also vary drastically depending on which ISP you have, and which service. Your ISP may also throttle FTP data, who knows. You could try using an alternative port.

I think what I'm learning here is that FTP isn't going to be very practical for my use; mostly larger video files. That's a shame. I was really excited about it when I first got the DNS-321.

I would appreciate anyone else's comments who have been using FTP.

Thanx.

Are you trying to stream video from your NAS via the Internet or something?

Not trying to stream.
Just wanted to be able to post the files so a couple of people could download.

I realize there are websites designed for this, but I just thought it would be a bonus of purchasing the DNS-321.

I let one of my 350MB files go thru the complete cycle, just to prove that my FTP was working properly, and it worked fine. It just took 1 1/2 hours.

That's unacceptable as far as I'm concerned, since most of my files are around 700MB.

Since I'm new to the FTP thing, I was just curious as to what others were doing with it.

Thanx.

Unfortunately it wouldn't make a difference if you had the best NAS money could buy, it's all about the bandwidth. I don't think you are going to be able to do that any quicker.

As you say, Rapishare et all might be the way to go.
