Shareport / Mac OS 10.6.2 (snow leopard) / DIR - 628
« on: March 06, 2010, 12:02:40 PM »

Attention Technical Support:

I have an Intel Macbook Pro, running OS 10.6.2 and I am trying to use the D-Link DIR-628 w/Shareport Utility to access an external hard drive.

I spoke to D-Link Tech Support yesterday and was advised to install Shareport version 3.0 for Mac OS from the D-Link DNS-323 page: ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Multimedia/dns323/Apps/dns323_shareport_utility_V30_MAC.zip

The rep said there was another version of the latest Mac Shareport software but it had not been posted on the forum yet. Version 1.10 (June 2009) is listed on the DIR 628 support page and it does not work.

When I first installed the Shareport utility for DNS 323 it appeared to work. My drive was recognized and I was able to copy data to and from.

Since that first time it has not worked. The drive shows up in the Shareport window but when I attempt to connect I get an error message: Connection to (hard drive name) failed. After clicking OK on the error message, the Shareport window says I'm connected to the drive but the drive does not show up in my finder. I've tried other external hard drives with the same result.

Please provide a link for the latest Shareport Utility for DIR 628, Mac OS 10.6. Thank you.

Have you tried looking under your product downloads page for SharePort version 3.0R1? I think it is under "Other Downloads" or something. Works for me...

I couldn't find Shareport 3.0R1. On the DIR-628 "additional downloads" page they still have version 1.10 (from June 2009) listed. Where did you find your version? Can you post a link?

I purchased a DIR-826 last week and use it with my MacBook and IBM Laptop.  Here some tips.

1.  In the System Preference in Mac, delete your printer.
2.  Download and use Silex utility rather than the d-link re branded version.  Much more stable.
http://www.silexamerica.com/support/software/svl.html
3.  Start your printer first, open the utility and connect, print your document.
3.  To go from printing a document to scanning a document, you must disconnect the link, turn off the printer, and start again.  The utility does not work well with multifunction devices.

Hope this helps.

Macrugger - thanks for the link - this has been working for me when the 3.0 wouldn't.  Appreciate it! ;D

Macrugger- Thanks so much for the tips! It worked for me!

Everyone- If you are still having trouble and haven't already done so- I suggest you give Macrugger's method a try. Here is his instructions as posted above. I think the key step was deleting the printer in system preferences/printers, first- which I had not done previously.

For the record here is my setup (and this was done on June 14th 2011):
macbook pro 6,2 intel core i7 2.66GHz
OSx snow 10.6.7
Wireless Router N Range booster D-link DIR-628
Router Hardware version A2, Firmware Version 1.25NA (Downloaded from D-link site- search 'DIR 628')
Printer Cannon MP280
Software/App SX Virtual Link (downloaded from link in the instructions Below)

Pre Instructions:
If you have been trying without success I suggest you do the following before starting.
-Uninstall all versions of SX Virtual Link that you have installed. (use the uninstaller provided, or use appzapper  http://www.appzapper.com/)
-Uninstall all versions of D-Link Shareport that you installed. (same methods)
-delete all installation files of the above as to prevent confusion or mistakes (+empty trash)
-Close all, and restart.

1.A  In the System Preference in Mac, delete your printer.
1.B  Restart.
2.  Download and use Silex utility rather than the d-link re branded version.  Much more stable.
http://www.silexamerica.com/support/software/svl.html
2.B  restart.
3.  Start your printer first, open the utility and connect, print your document.
3.  To go from printing a document to scanning a document, you must disconnect the link, turn off the printer, and start again.  The utility does not work well with multifunction devices.

Hope this helps.
