is there a way to map or create short cuts from folders outside of the users main folders ie:

folder structure now is:

Volume_1\user 1
Volume_1\user 2
Volume_1\user 3
Volume_1\user 3
Volume_1\Files\Music
Volume_1\Files\Movies
Volume_1\Files\Pictures

the music folder is also the itunes shared libary, what I want to do is have the 3 folders, music, movies and pictures all appear in the each users folders so that they can add stuff to the folders but also see everything that everyone is adding.

I have given each user persmission in the network access panel to their personal folders and to the 3 folders in the files section, however the folders in the files section does not appear when the use signs in.

I must be missing a step or 2.

How can I map the files folder to each user without coping the informaiton over to their personal folders.

If you telnet in, or can run commands, then you can create a symbolic link within the user_x strutcure that points to movies, music and pictures.

I don't think that's necessary, you might be over complicating things. Why do the media folders *have* to show up within a user's folder? You can create shortcuts to the shares that the NAS creates or you can map drives to them. Regardless of what shares are visible on the NAS, providing you have configured the shares with the correct permissions in the NAS's web interface only those users or groups will have access.

E.g create four shares in the web interface for folders user1-4 and assign read-write access to each user and share. Create another three shares for your media with read-write access to "all users"

When you navigate to the NAS either directly or through windows network you will see all shares. As I say, you can create normal windows shortcuts or map drives to them if you wish.

okay got problem solved, all I did was create short cuts to the files folder placed the short cuts in each users folder.  Gave each user access to my files folder, now when they click on the short cuts, it automatically maps to the files folder.  I have young kids so I have to keep it simple.
