  I have set my DNS 323 with 2 Samsung 1tb Spinpoint drives, and all works fine and dandy

Two Issues are bugging me

Scan disk is greyed out. I ran it once, after the power accidentally got pulled, and since then it has been greyed out

Also, I have tried everything I can to get disk quotas to work, and no matter what I do nothing seems to change the "unlimited" from changing to my desired quota limits. (don't want my children flooding it with their files)

At the mo I am backing all files from it to do a re-format of the drives

Also it their a simple, easy and idiot proof way to host a web site from it, not bothered about the world seeing it, just as an Intranet. Seen things like funplugs, and an o/s that replaces or sits on top of the built in one. But I see lots of "Don't Brick It" warnings

Restetting the unit back to factory defaults and re-formatting may cure the issues. Are you also running a recent firmware version? I.e. 1.08 or 1.09?

As for hosting a web server, you will need Fonz Funplug to do this. It's unsupported by Dlink, but if you don't mind tinkering with your NAS, and have a backup of your data, it's generally quite safe providing you don't flash anything. As you have root level access to the NAS, you can do all sorts of things - including wipe your drives.

I have installed several firmware updates, 1.08 bets, 1.08 final, now on 1.09

I think the box was on 1.02 or the like when I first connected it

I am at the mo moving all the data of it.

Am I right in thinking that I can use more than 1 format type, e.g ext 3 or ext 4. What is the general view, I have read that ext3 is the more stable and faster.

The choices are EXT2 or EXT3. EXT2 is apparently marginally faster, but EXT3 offers journalling support so is more robust. I'd go with EXT3 personally.

Well, after backing all my data off, and re-formatting, and deciding on EXT2, all now works fine

Now have scandisk, and also quotas working
