DNS-321 Power Management issue
« on: December 19, 2010, 12:10:45 AM »

Hello guys i just bought this dns-321 and under power management and it shows to spin down the hdd after 15 mins of no use and was told buy the seller thatd it would also power off or stand by. But it wont go on stand by unless i press the power button and now its getting real loud and noisy and temperatures are high if i go to sleep and don't press the button on it it will be on all night with the long blue light going up. Don't know if this is normal or if someone can help me solve this issue. Thank you.

The NAS's drives will spin down, that's all that happens when the unit hibernates. It does not power off automatically, unless the temperature exceeds a limit. I'm not sure if the light will dim on the front during hibernation.

Make sure you are running the latest firmware (1.03 I think) since some people reported issues with the fans turning off on the older ROMs.

The temps you are seeing look fine.

When the drives are not running the blue vertical bar should not be lit.  So you might start by assuming that the drives are running (generating heat and keeping the fans running), and see if you can track down a problem with that.  I'd start by turning off all of the servers (FTP, UPnP, iTunes, DHCP, etc.), unplugging the unit from the network, and waiting 15 minutes to see if the drives go to standby and the blue vertical light goes off.  If that's successful, you can start turning on the servers and seeing which one is causing the drives to stay on. Maybe there's something else in your network that is touching the NAS every now and then, preventing it from going to standby.

To follow-up on DMW's reply, also check the firmware for your drives.  Probably a long shot, but it is always possible the firmware has been updated to address issues, even if they are new.
