Throughput Issue
« on: December 17, 2010, 06:31:34 AM »

I posted this on DNS-343 forum (with no replies) and was hoping the similarity between the DNS-323 and DNS-343 would elicit a response here...

My two DNS-343s exhibit a typical performance of ~10-14 Mbps.  Every few weeks, the throughput degrades to ~4.3 Mbps on my Windows 7 box, while the throughput maintains ~10-14 mbps on my XP boxes.

Rebooting the Windows 7 box fixed the problem, until it recurs again a few weeks later.

When this issue occurs, the throughput between the Windows 7 box and other devices on the network are not impacted (and work at optimal levels).  Rebooting the DNS-343s and router have no impact. The Windows 7 box is on a wired port.

Does anyone know the cause of this issue?

I've never paid much attention to it, but I do notice varying speeds with my unit and vista/7

It obviously relates to Windows 7, rather than the DNS-323 - have you looked around the various Win7 fora?

I don't have a good answer to your question, and in fact am puzzled by other Win7 related performance issues when accessing files stored across a network - I've been led to believe that Win7 handles network attached storage (and I used that term to encompass any & all storage not locally attached) differently, and attempts to use some form of encryption, which may not be supported (more frequently not), which is apparently one cause of reduced throughput - this of course does not explain the degradation that you mention.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

I've read other posts by users indicating the same degraded performance only on Windows 7 (while other brand NAS perform at optimal levels).
