D-Link 655 w/ Firmware: 1.35NA ~ Shareport Errors Connecting to External HD

I've recently upgraded my firmware for my D-Link router, and I've installed the Shareport utility on my daughter's computer laptop (netbook).  I have a 1TB external hard drive attached to the USB port on the D-link, and I've made sure the driver has been loaded on the netbook for the HD.  I have two problems:

1.  The connection to the external HD continually drops, and I receive an error message; the software will reconnect a number of times then quit trying to connect all together - why?

2.  In the short amount of time that I can get the netbook to connect via the Shareport Utility, the external HD is not visible anywhere - how do I access it?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
