SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB
« on: December 12, 2010, 10:24:06 PM »

Is this drive compatible with DNS-321?  I googled it and found someone mentioning it uses 4K sector.  Not sure if 4K sector is the same as Advanced Format.
thanks,

Yes, I am pretty sure AFT = 4k sectors (at least in 1st generation AFT).

From the research I did, it seems that the biggest issues with AFT drives are:

1. Performance (over time).
2. RAID

I believe Samsung has an alignment tool (http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/downloads/support_in_aft.html) which addresses the alignment issue, much like other vendors.

RAID however, leaves me uneasy.  I can't get any reliable information.

I suppose if you plan on individual disks or JBOD and you align the drives you will be fine.  Maybe...

For me, I tried to buy the older Samsung F3 drives from CircuitCity.com (clearly listed as F3) but they sent me F4 so back they went.  I bought some Hitachi 2TB drives (Hitachi doesn't currently use AFT on any of their desktop drives under 2.1 TB) and they seem to be fine in the DNS-321, even in RAID.  I have tested the rebuild early in my setup but I'm planning on doing a real test this weekend once I ensure all my data is backed up.
