Remote access to DNS-323 Admin functions
« on: January 18, 2011, 11:08:39 AM »

I have a DNS-323 that is at home which is about 300 miles from me right now and I would like to know if there is a way to set up the DNS-323 so maintenance settings can be done on it the next time I am 300 miles away. Things like add or delete users, shut down, etc.  Thanks, Anne

You certainly can.

What you need to do is "port forward" a port on your router/firewall (lets say 12345) to the internal IP address of your NAS, at port 80. How you do this exactly depends on your router/firewall.

Once this is setup, the idea is that you enter your ISP assigned public IP address and your designated port number in a browser, and your NAS's web interface will be available.

E.g. http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:12345

Of course, your ISP IP address may change, or you may not know what it is. This is where registering for a free Dynamic DNS service comes in. Registering with a service such as dyndns.org, you can choose a host name such as mynas.dyndns.org, which will always point to your ISP IP address. The record is kept up to date by configuring your router to login to your DYNDNS account and update it.

If you do not have any services already running on port 80 of your router (e.g. The routers web configuration site) you can choose 80 instead of 12345. That way, you don't need to specify a port number when you enter your ISP IP address or dyndns host name. Web services run on port 80 by default.
