Question if the DNS-323 fails and not the hard drive.

Hello,

I have been following this forum for a while as I am looking at getting a DNS-323 to run in raid 1 mode.

My question is if the DNS-323 ever fails can I pull off the data by putting one of the hard drives into a PC or will the hard drive only work with a replacement DNS-323.

I do plan to continue to do backups onto DVD but just asking as it would be quicker to recover from the harddrive than the backups.

The DNS-323 uses a linux ext2 file system - you can connect the drive to a PC running linux, or even Microsoft Windows, if you install the ext2ifs installable file system - which you can download here.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

One way to get a temporary Linux machine, is to use a "Linux Live CD" such as Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org)
This boot CD will run Linux, off the CD - leaving the original OS hard drive untouched.
