Increasing Signal Strenght
« on: January 02, 2011, 11:08:38 AM »

I have currently bought the DGL-4500 and did all the necessary steps to get a nat type 2 on my ps3 my singal strenght is not consisent. The ps3 is only about 25 feet from the router. I dont understand why it is not around 80-100% instead of 37-40%. I also have performed the steps on sticky notes and did all the port forwards. I currently have a bellsouth netopia modem for my internet. Please help me get a stronger signal strenght

Try setting the WiFi to Single mode G or N only at 2.4GHz. If you have a clear line of site and nothing in the way such as walls or doors, you could try N mode only at 5Ghz if the PS supports Wireless N mode at 5Ghz. 5GHz is best with nothing in the way or one room away. It's just the nature of the higher the frequency the more susceptible it is to objects interfering with the signal strength.  if you don't have any devices that use A, B or N then it's best to set the router to only broadcast the mode for the devices that support it. Why broadcast signal when it won't be used. Let us know how it goes.

It is always best to use an Ethernet cable rather than to use WiFi, you will get a lower ping and an overall better connection. I don't believe signal strength matters in determining your Nat type, if you have a Nat type 2 and your signal to the router sucks well you will just lag and won't connect properly. Have you tried placing the PlayStation 3 vertical rather than horizontal? If you are going to game heavily just remember to that wired is always best. Have a great day!

Also disabling "Short GI" under advanced wireless can help. And if don't have alot of B wireless networks around, disable "Extra Wireless Protection". Last make sure the "Auto scan" feature is enabled.

Here under "WIRELESS NETWORK SETTINGS". And if none of those work, its probably something interfering with your signal. I would try to isolate the source. First bring it line of site, as in  the same room, as the router, and see what your signal strength is there. If alot better, likly its something inbetween the PS3 and the router when you have the PS3 orginally. I call that passive interference. Now if it its still bad, likly its active interfence, which is some kind of RF or EM causing the issue. Could be your TV, could be a old fan, could be someone's elses wireless near by. If you have a laptop, does you laptop also get poor signal where the PS3 is? What about your cell phone? Is there ever a time where you have strong signal there?

If you go wired than you won't have to do do all these steps. Even after you fix the problem there is no guaranteeing that your connection will be on par and that you will have a stable and lag free connection. I really hate wireless gaming, it is okay but it is not the best. I'm anti wireless gaming! Also, have a great day.

If I could connect through a wire i most def would. However, I cant. My laptop transfers at a rate of 54mbs and 80% signal in the same place as my ps3 however my PS3 transfers at 11mps and 46% signal strenght. Is there anything other than going wired since that is not an option I can do. I know wireless isnt perfect but 80% is better than 46% strenght! Thanks!

How are your configing your PS3 for wireless? Are you doing auto or scanning for your network? What are your network settings?

I really understand that wired is not an option for you, but I think the PlayStation 3 does not have a very good wireless card. My ps3 barley gets to 80-90 ish % signal and my ps3 and router are in the same room. My only suggestion would be maybe bypass the ps3 wireless card by buying something like this http://tinyurl.com/2d8f5nd, it connects to the ps3 via Ethernet and than it connects wireless to your wireless router. this might solve your issues. Knowing that your laptop gets 80% in the same room as the ps3 and your ps3 gets a 46% signal.

Edit

I am glad your signal strength is now 70%, no need to buy anything. As long as you are getting a better online experience than before. You are good to go.

I have tried that device, and as much as I would love to say its great, it is problematic. Specailly in high noise areas. Just my experience though.

One thing I notice from my resent experience on wireless gaming is that N mode on 5Ghz seems to work well of your in close proximity to the router. I was on XBL using a N adapter for Xbox and it worked better then the G mode on 2.4GHz. Of course I was not on a 4500 router. I was using a DIR-628 router and using a bridged NG WNDR-3700 as an AP connected via LAN to the DIR-628. I tried the G mode only on the 3700 and it could not keep up for some reason even though it had more signal strength. I switched to N mode at 5GHz and had much better gaming experience. I'm wondering if your PS3 could be better served if you could get a N, 5GHz adaptor. If your in the same room as the router, maybe 5Ghz would work better for you for Wireless gaming. My 2 cents.
BTW, I'm home now, glad to be back on the 4500 router system. hehe.
