Setting up file sharing between computers on WLAN
« on: January 09, 2011, 04:35:47 PM »

When I was using my Linksys router, I had no difficulties setting up Windows File Sharing on my computers but since I upgraded to the DIR-655, file sharing have hardly worked.  Sometimes I could get one of the computers access files on another, but not the other away around.  Most of the time, none of the computers have access to the files on any of the other computers.  Two of the computers run Windows XP and another one runs Windows Vista.  All computers are on the same workgroup and able to connect to the internet through the router.  When calling D-Link tech support, I am told that they dont support file sharing and that I had to contact each computer's manufacture's tech support on the instructions on setting up the file sharing (each computer is from a different manufacture).  One of the tech supports did drop the slight hint that I needed to recreate the home network, but when I tried to do that, all I could find is the settings to connect to the router (which I had set up when I installed the new router) and to enable file sharing (which is already done) and to assign the workgroup, which they were all are already assigned to the same group.

Does anyone have advice on what I need to get it working?

Thank you,
CampSoup1988

PS: I believe all the computers (atleast 2 of them do) are able to access my wifi printer without any problems.

Hi CampSoup1988,

You need to go back over your settings on the Vista Computer. It acts similar to Network Magic. It is putting up a shield around your Shared Folders, because it isn't recognizing the new Router as your new Home Network.

Check out the settings. Remember that you must also configure the Public portion of Network and Sharing Center, because XP is Foreign to Visa.

thecreator, I dont see how check those settings on the Vista Computer.  I have set the network as Private.

Also, why would this restrict the two Windows XP from sharing files among them?

Hi CampSoup1988,

Change the following to:

802.11 Mode :   Mixed (N, G, B)
Enable Auto Channel Scan :   Uncheck / Disable
Wireless Channel :   Choose Channel 11
Transmission Rate :   Best
Channel Width :   Auto 20/40 Mhz
Visibility Status :   Visible

WIRELESS SECURITY MODE
Security Mode :   WPA-Personal

WPA
WPA Mode :   WPA2 Only!
Cipher Type :   AES
Group Key Update Interval :   3600 (seconds)

ROUTER SETTINGS
Router IP Address :   192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask :   255.255.255.0
Device Name :   A name I gave the device  (This is okay.)

Channel 11 is not always the best choice, best to use a program like Inssider to see what is being broadcast in the area.  Then use a channel that is not being used by your neighbors.

I considered setting the router for WPA2, but I did not do it because some of my family's media devices only support WPA1

Also, what exactly does Local Domain Name do, and why should I leave it blank?

All the computers are all on the same workgroup name as they were when I was using the Linksys router.
