I just want to do things in the right order. I've sold mine and want to properly reset it for the new owner. I had fun-plugged it which I assume won't affect how I reset it. Can I just remove the drives and hold down the reset button (I believe it has a recessed one) with it powered on ?

I know the web interface has a reset button. Will that wipe my drives ? (which I'll keep).

Use the web interface factory reset, it won't affect the data - fun_plug is a different story, mine won't write to flash, I don't know where you got yours or what it does.

Just take out the drives first and do a factory reset from within the UI. The DNS-323 is now "as bought" (except newer firmware), means all user/groups, FTP, Itunes and SMB settings are gone.
I don't know if this clears any AddOn modules and their settings too.

Oh, I don't know if your next NAS would use the already-filled HD's as they are or if it has to re-format them. So before you take the HD's out, make a backup. You might not be able to do that later.

This WILL work for a DNS-323 that has NOT been hacked - fun_plug IS a hack - it is a script that runs at startup.  IF the instructions in your fun_plug script write to flash or modify it in any way, then a reset to default MAY NOT reset the changes made by your fun_plug.

Mh, ok, didn't thought about that. I use Fonz' fun_plug too, but never toyed around with flash-writing scripts.

Would a re-flash of the current firmware erase any modifications too then?

The best person to address that question to would be the creator of the fun_plug, hopefully he knows where his fun_plug writes to.

AFAIK the only change to flash memory when following a FFP install is the password for the root account. That is the only mention, and there are guides regarding how to perform a firmware upgrade without getting caught out by a reset root password and no telnet/SSH access afterwards.

So to "truly" reset the box I would re-flash the firmware and factory reset.

You're assuming that ben2e is using fonz fun_plug - as is HSishi - but ben2e simply says that it has been fun-plugged.  You CAN create you own fun_plug, and fonz fun plug is not the only one out there.

If I recall, re-flashing the firmware will NOT remove a previously flashed root password.  I did this a while ago, so I am not 100% sure.

Perhaps the password is stored in the settings area of flash memory, which would make sense. In which case a factory reset would suffice.

By now you've probably reflashed, reset, sold and moved on anyway
