DIR-655 Ethernet Performance - Issue?
« on: September 01, 2008, 01:18:36 PM »

I have just purchased a DIR-655 A3.  Originally had firmware 1.11, but immediately updated to 1.20.  Was able to setup home network, both wireless (WPA2 AES). and wired.  This purchase was an "upgrade" from a DI-614+ (firmware 2.34).  The DI-614+ works just fine with the exception that it is 802.11b only so the speed is lacking in the wireless area.

The issue that I am having with the DIR-655 is that my wired speed is approximately 30% slower than the DI-614+.  It is almost like there is some type of lag occurring in the DIR-655.  Requests for website "hang" and sometimes this happens for 30 secs - 1 min.  Loading of webpages is also degraded.  The wireless seems to be working fine, 130 Mbps, but it is also experiencing the same level of lag or worse.
Wireless adapter and NIC are both up-to-date driver-wise.

Hard to describe this issue without actually seeing it.  My main concern right now is that DIR-655 is definitely slower than the DI-614+, wired and wireless, with this apparent lag.  Is this a firewall issue, SIP, QoS, WISH??  I've seen similar issues posted elsewhere but no real solution.

Background:
Windows XP SP3, Linksys WMP300N Wireless adapter, 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940) NIC.

Maybe you are seeing some of the same stuff I am seeing.  I've had the 655 for a while and upgraded the firmware recently.  While anything WAN seems faster, anything LAN seems MUCH slower, especially printing.

Try the followign to see if you see what I do.
- Connect to any remote printer and try to print anything, say a PDF or even just a notepad file.  If this takes a REALLY long time (minutes) or you get print job errors in the queue then you might be seeing what a few of us have here.
- Try rolling back your firmware to 1.11.  Then do the above again, and run your own tests and see what happens.

If 1.11 fixes it, then you have the same firmware issues we all do, and there is no appearant fix available yet, other than to stay on 1.11 until they fix 1.20.

Thanks for the tip.  I don't have a remote printer, but I can try to roll back to the 1.11 firmware.  I'll post again if that seems to have fixed anything.

Well, I downgraded to firmware 1.11 and all my problems went away.

So, issue solved.

I guess, as most people already know, 1.20 is causing some major issues of all types.

Thanks you for the help.

Glad it worked for you golfe.  Its not the ultimate fix of course but it has me working too.

I did notice that WAN speeds are slower with 1.11 than with 1.20.  It would be nice to get the stability and LAN performance with 1.10 along with the the WAN perf of 1.20.

I would really like both.

What do you mean WAN speeds are slower in 1.11? WAN speed is faster in 1.11 than it is in 1.20. Download speed decreases with 1.20 and weird wireless issues also. Not with 1.11. LAN is fine.
